White House launches Trump TV featuring administration highlights
The free channel streams on the White House’s YouTube channel and launched days after Trump banned three news outlets from the White House.
Just days after banning three news outlets — including two cable news networks — from the White House, President Donald Trump unveiled his own streaming service covering his administration, Trump TV: The Essentials Station. The around-the-clock streaming channel carries what the White House describes as the Trump Administration’s “biggest moments all in one place.” The feed is available on the White House’s YouTube channel and features “top videos, major remarks, and must-see highlights.”
Key Details:
- What is it?: Trump TV: The Essentials Station is a free channel streaming on YouTube featuring archival clips of administration events.
- Uncomfortable timing: The launch comes just days after Trump banned three news outlets from the White House, leading to a boycott from all major news outlets.
- Potential legal issues: The launch promo used clips from “The Simpsons,” “Friends,” “Family Guy,” and other titles, likely violating the individual copyrights.
New customers can save $15 per month for 5 months.
The launch promo drew from a wide slate of entertainment titles. Clips featured “The Simpsons,” “Friends,” “Family Guy,” “Home Alone,” and “SpongeBob SquarePants,” among others. Whether Trump was authorized to use that footage is not known, but the mix of studio-owned properties raises rights questions, especially given Trump’s history of violating copyrights in using unauthorized music at administration and campaign events.
Watch the teaser for Trump TV:
At launch, the account is running old White House events rather than live programming, but that seems to fit the focus of the channel. Rather than being a state-run news channel, it appears that Trump TV will function in a similar style to free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels on streaming services, offering a lean-back feed rather than up-to-date coverage. The feed updates “in real-time,” though, unlike most FAST channels, it does not yet have a defined schedule, instead opting for a stream of curated clips.
The launch followed Trump’s announcement last week that he would ban CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House. Those three outlets said Monday that they would file a First Amendment lawsuit, and major TV networks — including the Trump-aligned [Fox News Channel] —declined to fulfill pool coverage duties in response. This led to Monday’s presidential event having no clear audio. It remains to be seen how long the boycott will last, or if Trump TV will fill the gap, but for now, it appears to give the president’s most ardent fans an opportunity to relive moments from throughout his tenure in office.
