Warner Bros. Discovery extends Pay-1 deal with A24
The deal means that A24 films will continue to stream on HBO Max once their theatrical runs are completed.
A streaming service is only as good as its library, and HBO Max has long been considered the leader in prestige TV and movies, and parent company Warner Bros. Discovery is taking strides to maintain that reputation. That includes keeping other producers of high-quality content in the fold via licensing deals. WBD has announced that it has extended its existing deal with film studio A24, which will continue to license its movies to HBO Max for their first streaming run after theaters.
Key Details:
- Together again: HBO Max is renewing its Pay-1 deal with A24.
- No change expected: Audiences should still expect A24 movies to take 100 days or more to stream on HBO Max.
- Lengthening partnership: The two sides first struck a deal in late 2023.
The renewal of the Pay-1 deal between HBO Max and A24 follows a highly successful first run of movies on the streamer. Per data from HBO Max, half of A24 movies rank among the HBO Max top 10 most-watched films in their first two weeks of availability.
In addition, almost 70% of subscribers who watch one A24 movie on HBO Max return to watch additional titles. On average, a given fan watches four movies from the studio on the streamer.
“A24 has been an incredible partner, bringing a slate of talented creative voices and an engaged audience base to the platform,” HBO Max executive Royce Battleman said. “Their bold storytelling perfectly complements the distinct programming offered on HBO Max.”
The deal means that viewers will continue to be able to stream past titles from A24 on demand on HBO Max, and will also be able to access new movies like “Marty Supreme” and “The Death of Robin Hood” on the service as soon as they are released from their theatrical runs.
A24 first partnered with HBO Max on a Pay-1 deal in late 2023, and it’s clearly working out for both sides. Fans can expect to continue seeing A24 movies on HBO Max for multiple years to come. Viewers shouldn’t expect a shortening of the theatrical window A24 movies take advantage of before heading to streaming; it’s likely this window will continue to sit at 100 days or more going forward.
