How good are Disney+’s parental controls?

How good are Disney+’s parental controls?

With more and more content moving over from Hulu, plus live sports and news, parents will be glad to know Disney+ has strong parental controls.

Known for breaking major streaming stories, he’s covered everything from Netflix policy shifts to Peacock’s ad-tier changes. A sci-fi fan and Toshiba Fire TV user, he brings sharp analysis and a love for the genre to his reporting.
Disney+ offers good parental control options.

You might not think that parental controls are a big requirement for a streaming service like Disney+. The Disney brand has, after all, become synonymous with kids over the decades, and that demographic remains one of the company’s most important audiences.

But things are changing at Disney+. The streamer already offers a large selection of content from Hulu for customers who have subscriptions to both services, and in 2026, the Hulu app will be fully integrated into Disney+. That will mean the streamer has even more adult-oriented content than it did when Hulu titles first joined it, and with that in mind, strong parental controls will be needed for Hulu going forward. Does the streamer offer those controls?

What you need to know about parental controls on Disney+

How to set content ratings on Disney+

You can set the maximum content rating allowed on any profile on Disney+. No content rated more mature than the rating you set will be shown on that profile when you set this up.

To do so, navigate to the Disney profile settings screen, and under the Parental Controls section, you’ll see the Content rating section. Enter your password to confirm that yo,u as the account holder, are trying to change settings, then change them to your liking and click Save.

What is Junior Mode on Disney+?

Junior Mode can be enabled and disabled on the Disney+ mobile app or the streamer’s website. Create a profile with a name, and toggle Junior Mode to On under the parental controls section. Junior Mode includes movies and series appropriate for all ages, including a selection of Hulu content. This is more of a blanket parental control, which lets viewers set and forget their settings, keeping kids away from content they shouldn’t see.

Can you set up a PIN on Disney+?

Yes, you can use a pin to restrict others from accessing adult profiles on Disney+. To do so:

  1. Navigate to your profile on Disney+.
  2. Select Profile PIN under parental controls.
  3. Enter your password, and choose your PIN.
  4. Click Save.

Restrict who can create profiles on Disney+

Disney+ lets you restrict who can create new profiles, so kids don’t create adult profiles without permission. Navigate to Account > Settings > Restrict profile creation and toggle it to On to stop anyone but the account owner from making new profiles.

Can you restrict live programming on Disney+?

Some content on Disney+, such as live news and sports, does not have content ratings. These are allowed by default, but parents can turn them off by using the following procedure:

  1. Navigate to profiles and click Edit.
  2. Choose your profile.
  3. Under parental controls, switch live titles to Off.
