When will ‘Resident Evil’ haunt a streamer near you?

When will ‘Resident Evil’ haunt a streamer near you?

We’ll predict when the newest adaptation of the hit video game franchise will steam at home below.

The game that has launched a thousand films is launching yet another. “Resident Evil,” the latest adaptation of the video game of the same name, is arriving in theaters on Friday, Sept. 18. With Halloween just around the corner, some fans may be hoping that “Resident Evil” will be available to stream in time for the holiday, and we’ll give our prediction on when it will be available on demand here.

Key Details:

  • Frightfully good: “Resident Evil” is a hit with critics and preview audiences so far.
  • Big platform: Sony is distributing the movie, which means it will stream on Netflix.
  • Get comfortable: Movies distributed by Sony typically get long theatrical windows.

“Resident Evil” is set during events paralleling the game “Resident Evil 2,” but has been transplanted to a modern era. It follows a medical courier named Bryan who is just trying to make a delivery to Raccoon City. Waylaid by infected monsters during a viral outbreak, Bryan must fight his way free or risk being consumed by the virus himself.

So far, almost everyone who has seen the new “Resident Evil” has loved the movie. Calling it another major hit from director Zach Cregger, critics are loving the film; it has a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 90% score from audiences who have seen preview screenings. It’s also hit an 80 Metascore on Metacritc, and an 8.5 user score, the latter of which indicates “Universal Acclaim.”

When will ‘Resident Evil’ stream at home?

There are two questions every “Resident Evil” fan will want to know when seeking the film on streaming: where will it be available, and when? The “where” is easy to suss out; since Netflix and Sony have an extensive Pay-1 deal, “Resident Evil” will wind up on the world’s largest streamer once it’s out of theaters.

The “when” is a little more difficult to determine, but we do have some hints to follow. Sony movies usually get a long theatrical window of 100 days or more before arriving on Netflix, but another recent horror franchise flick from Sony — “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” — was available to stream just 74 days after coming out in theaters.

It’s another sign that Sony may be shortening its theatrical window, and I’ll use the same prediction for “Resident Evil.” If that proves accurate, the movie will become available to stream on Tuesday, Dec. 1 — too late for Halloween, but plenty early to bring a little spookiness to the holiday season.

Netflix

Netflix is a leading subscription-based video streaming service that offers on-demand access to an extensive library of over 3,000 movies, 2,000+ TV shows, and a growing collection of acclaimed Netflix originals. Renowned for producing groundbreaking content, Netflix has become a cultural powerhouse with hit originals like “Stranger Things,” “Wednesday,” “Squid Game,” “The Crown,” “Tiger King,” “Bridgerton,” “The Witcher,” and “Black Mirror.”

…

The platform constantly updates its catalog, introducing fresh content alongside timeless classics and international hits. Netflix’s commitment to storytelling has also earned critical acclaim, with award-winning exclusives such as “Roma,” “Marriage Story,” “The Power of the Dog,” “Mank,” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” In 2023, their animated film “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, further solidifying Netflix’s reputation for high-quality content.

Recently, Netflix has expanded beyond standard movies and TV titles with the addition of video podcasts, and is also exploring a digital store that would offer third-party streamers within the app.

Netflix offers three plans – stream on 2 devices in HD with the “Standard with Ads” ($8.99) plan, on 2 devices in HD with the “Standard” ($19.99) plan, and 4 devices in up to 4K on the “Premium” ($26.99) plan.
