When will you be able to stream ‘28 Years Later’? We take a guess
If you want to watch Danny Boyle’s latest zombie film from the safety of your own home, here’s how long we think you’ll have to wait.
There’s never a bad time for a new zombie flick, especially one from a storied franchise. That’s why fans are hurrying to theaters this weekend to catch a showing of “28 Years Later,” which makes its official debut on Friday, June 20. It’s not available to stream yet, but we’ll give you our expert prediction on when it will be available to watch with a subscription.
Key Details:
- Eye-popping reviews: ‘28 Years Later’ has a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
- The biggest of them all: Sony is distributing the movie, so it will stream first on Netflix.
- More like 128 days later: Sony films usually take three to four months to reach streaming at the earliest.
The dead rise again in “28 Years Later,” which takes place nearly three decades after the rage virus escaped from a weapons laboratory to devastate those who become infected. A small group of survivors on an island does their best to keep existing, but when one decides to venture to the mainland, he discovers that a new mutation is spreading to both the infected and non-infected alike.
Critics are gaga for the film, which currently owns a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A 68% rating from viewers who have gotten a preview screening of the movie suggests it may not be exactly the experience they thought they’d get, but overall, it still appears to be a very worthy installment in the franchise.

When will you be able to stream ‘28 Years Later’ at home?
Sony is distributing “28 Years Later,” which means it’s easy to say where the movie will stream. Sony still has a Pay-1 deal with Netflix, which means that streamer will be the first stop for the movie when it is no longer exclusive to theaters and to premium video-on-demand (PVOD) services that let viewers rent or buy movies still in theaters.
Because Sony is responsible for distributing the movie, it’ll be a while before you can stream it at home. Recent releases from Sony such as “It Ends With Us” and “Venom: The Last Dance” both spent more than 120 days in theaters despite lukewarm box offices, but “Paddington in Peru” broke that pattern, staying in theaters for only 90 days before arriving on Netflix.
I think “28 Years Later” will go back to the established routine and stay in theaters for 120 days before making its Netflix debut. If that turns out to be the case, the movie will arrive on the service on Saturday, Oct. 18, the perfect way for horror lovers to get their fix around Halloween.
