YouTube TV, NBCU reach deal to avoid channel blackout
In addition, the agreement will make Peacock available on YouTube’s Primetime Channels.
Once again, cord-cutters have been spared a significant channel blackout, despite the portentous warnings of involved parties. Over the past week, both media conglomerate NBCUniversal and the Google-owned live TV streaming service YouTube TV have warned viewers that the end of their carriage agreement could lead to the removal of channels like NBC, USA Network, Bravo, and more. After a temporary extension of the deal was reached on Wednesday, the two sides announced the following day that they had reached a multi-year agreement that not only will keep the networks in YouTube TV’s channel lineup, but will also bring NBCU’s flagship streamer Peacock to YouTube’s Primetime Channels platform.
Key Details:
- A positive resolution: NBCU and Google have reached a deal to keep the channels available to stream on YouTube TV.
- A la carte streaming: The deal will also make Peacock available via Primetime Channels.
- A pattern develops: The multi-year deal comes one month after Google reached a similar deal with Fox.
New customers can save $15 per month for 5 months.
The deal will ensure that NBCU’s current full complement of broadcast and cable channels will remain available to YouTube TV subscribers for an undisclosed number of years. That means users will have access to Bravo, CNBC, E!, Golf Channel, MS NOW, NBC, SYFY, Telemundo, and Universo through the streamer. Additionally, the announcement revealed that beginning this fall, NBCU will launch a new cable sports network dubbed NBC Sports Network (NBCSN), which will also stream on YouTube TV.
In addition to the linear channel aspect of the deal, in the coming months, Google will allow cord-cutters to sign up to Peacock via their a la carte subscription platform YouTube Primetime Channels. This is notably different than many other recent carriage agreements that have seen channel distributors make content owners’ streaming platforms available for free as part of their subscriptions. YouTube TV has not made any such deals as of yet, and instead, Peacock will be available for interested consumers to sign up for on their own, while still keeping it as part of their standard YouTube TV bill.
“Our new agreement with Google is a clear win for both our business and our viewers – underscoring the enduring value of our must-see shows, films, sports, and live events while expanding our reach to even more audiences,” NBCU platform distribution and partnership president Matt Schnaars said. “We’ve secured long-term access to our full portfolio of broadcast and cable networks on YouTube TV, and we’re advancing our Peacock strategy with an upcoming launch on YouTube Primetime Channels and ongoing presence on Google TV. This agreement positions us for continued growth and reflects our commitment to delivering exceptional entertainment to fans across platforms.”
Also included in the agreement is YouTube’s ability to include short-form clips, highlights, and shows from NBCU’s premium programming on the free YouTube platform. Also, films and TV episodes from NBCU and Universal Pictures will continue to be available to buy or rent on [Google TV], YouTube TV, YouTube, and YouTube Primetime Channels. Peacock will also continue to be available across Google’s Android platforms, including Google Play and Google TV.
“This deal builds on our long-standing partnership with NBCU while addressing the evolving media landscape and recognizing the importance of making content available where and how viewers want to watch it,” YouTube’s VP and head of media and sports Justin Connolly said. “We are pleased to have reached this agreement and look forward to continuing our partnership to serve billions of viewers around the world.”
This carriage agreement comes just over a month after YouTube TV reached a similar agreement with Fox to continue distributing channels like Fox, Fox News, FS1, and FS2.
