YouTube TV blackout of TelevisaUnivision channels ends

YouTube TV blackout of TelevisaUnivision channels ends

A new carriage deal between the two means that channels like Univision are once again available on YouTube TV.

YouTube TV has ended its blackout of TelevisaUnivision channels with a new distribution deal.

While the blackout of Disney-owned channels on YouTube TV earlier this fall drew all of the headlines, there was another blackout of major channels on the live TV streaming service occurring simultaneously. For nearly two months, YouTube TV customers have been unable to watch channels owned by TelevisaUnivision, but the carriage dispute between the two sides finally ended last week with a new deal restoring the channels to the platform’s lineup.

Key Details:

  • Call it off: The carriage battle between TelevisaUnivision and YouTube TV has ended.
  • Key concession: TelevisaUnivision channels will continue to be distributed in YouTube TV’s base plan.
  • Heading down south: YouTube TV’s Primetime Channels store is coming to Mexico for the first time.

TelevisaUnivision channels first went dark on YouTube TV in early October. As announced on Nov. 26, the carriage fight between the streamer and TelevisaUnivision has ended with the creation of a new deal. The new partnership will continue to offer TelevisaUnivision channels, including Univision, TUDN, and Galavision in the YouTube TV base plan.

That’s a considerable concession from the streamer, as YouTube TV reportedly wanted these channels moved out of its base plan, while TelevisaUnivision was insistent they remain available without the need for an add-on. The programmer got its way in the end, and YouTube TV will continue to offer those channels to all paid subscribers.

“We are pleased to have reached an agreement that restores Univision to YouTube TV, ensuring millions of Hispanics can access the news, sports, and entertainment they care about and have relied on for over 70 years,” TelevisaUnivision CEO Dan Alegre said. “This agreement recognizes the essential role that our content plays in the daily lives of our viewers, as we fulfill our mission of reflecting the voice of Hispanics. We look forward to serving YouTube TV subscribers again.”

Another new provision of the carriage agreement between the two sides is that the ViX Premium streaming service will now be offered in the YouTube TV Primetime Channels store. Finally, YouTube TV will begin to distribute its digital marketplace in Mexico for the first time.
