Apple TV app for now supports casting to Android TVs

Apple TV app for now supports casting to Android TVs

On Monday, the company announced this staple feature was coming to the app built for its largest competitor.

Known for breaking major streaming stories, he’s covered everything from Netflix policy shifts to Peacock’s ad-tier changes. A sci-fi fan and Toshiba Fire TV user, he brings sharp analysis and a love for the genre to his reporting.

For a long time, users of Apple services on Android devices had grown accustomed to the idea that they simply wouldn’t get a native Apple app for Android devices. Subscribers to the Apple TV streaming service had to use that service’s website on a browser if they wanted to watch a TV show or movie, but all of that changed last year when reporting indicated that at long last, an Apple TV app for Android was coming. That app launched in February, but it took until today for Apple to roll out a key feature for users on Android: the ability to cast to smart TVs.

Key Details:

  • Send it: The Apple TV app for Android now supports Google Cast.
  • Easy to find: The cast button is conspicuously placed within the Apple TV app.
  • Different directions: Apple is expanding the ability to cast, while other streaming services are curtailing it.

The Apple TV app for Android now supports the Google Cast function, letting audiences who have an Android device stream TV from their phone to their TV. This was a major gap in the functionality of the Apple TV app for Android when it first launched, but that omission has now been corrected.

To use casting on the Apple TV app for Android, locate the casting icon in the top-right corner of the screen, next to the profile icon. This will open a list of options that you can choose to cast to, and once you do, a miniplayer that includes playback information and more details will pop up.

Version 2.2 of the Apple TV app for Android is rolling out to viewers even now. If you haven’t gotten the update yet, keep checking your phone, or go to the Play Store and see if there are any updates available that way. Once you’ve got the updated version of the app downloaded, you’ll be ready to cast at will.

Apple TV is expanding the ability to cast to different devices at a time when other streamers are curtailing this feature. Netflix, for example, recently discontinued the ability to cast from phones to TVs on a wide range of devices. That won’t bother customers of Apple TV, however, who can now cast from their phone to their TV while using the Android version of the Apple TV app.

Apple TV

Apple TV (formerly known as Apple TV+) is a subscription video streaming service for $14.99 per month, offering a growing slate of original series, films, documentaries, and specials. Unlike other platforms that combine licensed titles with originals, Apple TV is built entirely around exclusive programming, making it the home of critically acclaimed hits such as “Ted Lasso,” “Severance,” “The Morning Show,” and “Silo.” Its lineup continues to expand with award-winning dramas, comedies, family-friendly shows, and blockbuster original films like “CODA,” which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

…

In October 2025, Apple TV agreed to a deal with Formula 1 to exclusively broadcast all Formula 1 races starting with the 2026 season.

Apple TV also features coverage of all regular-season matches for Major League Soccer (MLS) at no additional cost.

On August 28th, 2026, the price of Apple TV was increased from $12.99 per month to $14.99 per month, the second increase in as many years.

The service is available worldwide through the Apple TV app, which is built into Apple devices and supported on most smart TVs, streaming players like Roku and Fire TV, game consoles, and web browsers. Subscribers can watch on demand, download episodes and movies for offline viewing, and stream in 4K with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, where available. Apple TV also offers family sharing, allowing up to six people to use one subscription at no extra cost.

With a competitive monthly price and bundles available through Apple One — which combines Apple TV with Apple Music, Apple Arcade, iCloud storage, and more — the service continues to grow as a key part of Apple’s ecosystem. Apple TV delivers one of the strongest collections of exclusive content in the streaming space for viewers seeking prestige originals, cinematic storytelling, and seamless access across devices.
