Can’t watch Apple TV? Here’s why
The streamer went down last night for thousands of subscribers, and as of Thursday morning is still not completely up and running.
Apple TV subscribers who tried to log in to the streamer to watch the latest episodes of “Slow Horses” or “Ted Lasso” on Wednesday got a bit of a shock. The streamer suffered a major outage on Wednesday evening, and as of Thursday morning, its own system status page shows the issue hasn’t been fully resolved.
Key Details:
- Sad afternoon: Issues for Apple services began shortly before 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
- Still working: Although other Apple services have been restored to working order, Apple TV is still not completely up.
- Crossed wire?: Apple’s support page also says that Apple TV may be undergoing scheduled maintenance.
Many Apple TV customers who tried to use the streamer on Wednesday evening found that the app wouldn’t load. Apple says the issue began at 4:43 p.m. ET on Wednesday, and the website Down Detector concurs, showing hundreds of reports of the streamer’s issues around that time.
As of Thursday morning, most, if not all, subscribers are now able to watch Apple TV once again. My own user test of the streamer came up functioning as normal, but some customers may still be having scattered problems loading and watching the service.
Apple’s own system status page shows Apple TV as the only current service in its ecosystem that is experiencing issues. The page also says that Apple TV may be undergoing “scheduled maintenance” that will leave the streamer unavailable for some customers, but this outage appears too widespread to be explained simply by this one factor.
Other Apple services were affected on Wednesday as well, including the App Store, Apple Fitness Plus, Apple Music, Apple Music Subscriptions, and others. However, the problems with these services have all been resolved per the company; only the Apple TV outage persists to any degree.
Apple will likely have Apple TV up and running again by Thursday afternoon, but that will be of little comfort to folks who have had the ending of the most recent episode “Ted Lasso” spoiled for them.
Apple TV
Apple TV (formerly known as Apple TV+) is a subscription video streaming service for $14.99 per month, offering a growing slate of original series, films, documentaries, and specials. Unlike other platforms that combine licensed titles with originals, Apple TV is built entirely around exclusive programming, making it the home of critically acclaimed hits such as “Ted Lasso,” “Severance,” “The Morning Show,” and “Silo.” Its lineup continues to expand with award-winning dramas, comedies, family-friendly shows, and blockbuster original films like “CODA,” which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
