Can You Stream ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ Now? When Will it Come Out on Apple TV+?
The Space Race-era romantic comedy starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum is blasting into theaters July 12.
The temperature outside may be sizzling these days, but so is the on-screen chemistry between Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson in “Fly Me to the Moon,” the latest release from Apple Studios which comes to theaters on Friday, July 12. The movie was originally intended to be a direct-to-streaming release, but strong test scores from audiences led to a shift, and I’ll let you know when I think it will be available to watch with a subscription below!
Key Details:
- The film has a “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics love the pairing of Johansson and Tatum.
- As an Apple Studios release, “Fly Me to the Moon” will end up on Apple TV+ first.
- The film probably won’t take as long as “Killers of the Flower Moon” or “Napoleon” to reach the streamer.
Watch a Trailer for ‘Fly Me to the Moon’:
“Fly Me to the Moon” stars Tatum as Cole Davis, the NASA director in charge of the Apollo 11 moon landing. He’s got enough on his plate as it is, and when publicist Kelly Jones (Johansson) moves in and begins trying to work her magic to boost NASA’s public image, sparks fly. Things get even more hectic when the White House orders the two to work up a fake moon landing, in case the real mission goes awry.
Critics have special praise for the chemistry between the movie’s two leads. “Fly Me to the Moon” has a 65% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and while reviewers admit the film hits some rom-com tropes particularly hard, the performances of Johansson and Tatum are more than enough to carry it through.
When Can You Stream ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ on Apple TV+?

As mentioned above, “Fly Me to the Moon” was supposed to debut exclusively on Apple TV+, but high marks from test audiences convinced Apple Studios to give it a theatrical release. That at least helps to confirm that the movie will stream on Apple TV+ first and foremost, once it’s done in theaters and no longer an exclusive of digital rental and purchase platforms.
There’s been a bit of a differing release schedule for Apple Studios movies on Apple TV+ of late. Its most recent releases were “Napoleon,” “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Argylle,” and each had a unique theatrical window. “Napoleon” took 108 days to reach Apple TV+, while “Killers” spent 84 days in cinemas. Both films were considered Oscar contenders, unlike “Argylle,” which took 71 days to reach Apple TV+, just one day longer than I predicted back in March.
I think “Fly Me to the Moon” will hew closer to “Argylle” in terms of the theatrical window, and my official prediction is that it lands on Apple TV+ on Friday, Sept. 20, which is 70 days from its initial release. That would also follow the pattern of releasing movies to a streaming service on a Friday, which many services like doing because it lets them capitalize on weekend viewing.
Apple TV
Apple TV (formerly known as Apple TV+) is a subscription video streaming service for $14.99 per month, offering a growing slate of original series, films, documentaries, and specials. Unlike other platforms that combine licensed titles with originals, Apple TV is built entirely around exclusive programming, making it the home of critically acclaimed hits such as “Ted Lasso,” “Severance,” “The Morning Show,” and “Silo.” Its lineup continues to expand with award-winning dramas, comedies, family-friendly shows, and blockbuster original films like “CODA,” which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
