Netflix lands long-awaited boxing match between Canelo and Crawford
The boxing match is set for Sept. 13 in Las Vegas and will undoubtedly be one of the major events of the fall.
Netflix is getting back into the boxing ring. The streaming service announced on Tuesday that it would be the host of a bout between Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez and Terence “Bud” Crawford, two of the most skilled boxers in North America. The fight should bring a huge audience to Netflix — provided that it can solve certain technical issues that plagued it in its last boxing stream.
Key Details:
- Fall fun: The Canelo vs. Crawford bout will take place Sept. 13.
- Anticipated bout: Both Canelo and Crawford have over 40 career wins.
- Sign of things to come?: The fight could be an indication of a deepening relationship between Netflix and Dana White.
The fight between Canelo and Crawford will take place on Saturday, Sept. 13, live from Las Vegas. The bout has been highly anticipated by boxing fans; Canelo currently sports a record of 62-2-2, and Crawford’s is just as sterling at 41-0. Both boxers have more than 30 career knockouts to their names.
Viewers will be able to stream the fight with any Netflix plan. Fight night will not be a pay-per-view event, so customers who aren’t subscribed to Netflix already can watch the evening’s pugilistic festivities with the Netflix Standard with Ads plan, starting at just $8 per month.
Netflix will have to make sure that it has its technical problems all ironed out before the fight begins. The Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson bout in November 2024 saw hundreds of thousands of viewers around the world experience issues, with many unable to stream the fight at all.
The fight is being co-promoted by Turki Alalshikh’s Riyadh Season, as well as UFC CEO Dana White and Sela, a privately owned Saudi Arabian entertainment company. The fight could help to deepen the relationship between White and Netflix, which could lead to even bigger dealings in the future.
UFC is currently looking for a new media partner, as its deal with ESPN+ to stream pay-per-view events ends after 2025. Netflix loves sporting events that it can eventize such as UFC fights, and an improving relationship between the streamer and White could grease the negotiation wheels should Netflix choose to pursue the fighting league.
Netflix will also offer two NFL games on Christmas Day in 2025, just as it did in 2024. The streamer is continuing to add sporting events, making it an even more formidable opponent to other streaming services on the market.
