DAZN announces creation of new basketball-focused division

The launch of DAZN Basketball could indicate the company is planning a larger pursuit of basketball streaming rights.

Are more hoops headed to DAZN? It could well be so. The global sports streaming service, which specializes in combat sports in the United States but which also distributes the NFL, NBA, and other top sports leagues in international territories, has announced the creation of a new corporate division called DAZN Basketball. It could signal the streamer is interested in pursuing digital rights to more basketball content around the world.

Key Details:

  • Chus Bueno has been appointed as managing director of DAZN Basketball.
  • The creation of the division could mean DAZN intends to pursue international college basketball rights.
  • In November, DAZN struck a deal to air EuroLeague Women’s basketball globally.

DAZN has announced that Chus Bueno has been selected to head up the DAZN Basketball division as managing director. Bueno has served as Vice President of NBA Europe, Middle East and Africa, as well as Managing Director for NBA Spain, among other prestigious posts in global basketball.

“I am thrilled to take on this challenge and lead the launch of DAZN Basketball,” Bueno said. “I have watched and admired DAZN’s vision and its tremendous growth. The goal is to create unparalleled experiences for basketball fans globally. The sport offers immense potential, and DAZN is perfectly placed to capture this opportunity.”

The launch of DAZN Basketball could mean the streamer intends to make a wider pursuit of basketball broadcasting rights around the globe. The service already offers live NBA games in many global territories, but it could have interest in acquiring American college basketball rights. ESPN International has held rights to events like the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, but perhaps DAZN is interested in getting those rights for itself.

DAZN made a deal with EuroLeague Women, the highest level of women’s basketball competition in Europe, to become its global broadcast partner in November. The service also offers WNBA games, Super League Basketball, Basketball Serie A (LBA), EuroLeague, EuroCup, Betclic Elite (LNB), and Liga ACB in various countries around the globe.

“In launching DAZN Basketball, we are positioning ourselves at the forefront of basketball entertainment globally,” said DAZN Group CEO Shay Segev. “Chus Bueno’s extensive expertise and strategic vision will be pivotal as we enhance our offerings and deepen our partnerships with FIBA and local leagues, establishing DAZN as the definitive home for basketball.”
