John Cena and Idris Elba are political rivals in new action comedy ‘Heads of State’
Two world leaders must team up to stop a global conspiracy — whether they like it or not.
Action comedies are one of my favorite genres. And lately, Prime Video has been quietly crushing it in that department (you can see my favorites here). I’m definitely not complaining. First there was “The Fall Guy” last year, then they followed it up with the improv-gone-wrong chaos of “Deep Cover,” and now they’re back with “Heads of State.” This one pairs Idris Elba and John Cena as rival world leaders forced to team up to stop a global conspiracy — which sounds ridiculous in the best way. Here’s everything to know about the new Prime Video original movie, “Heads of State.”

Is there a trailer for ‘Heads of State’?
Yes — and it delivers exactly what you’d expect from the premise. The trailer for “Heads of State” is funny and explosive, with gun fights, action sequences, and plenty of disrespect between Cena and Elba. Honestly, I’m super excited to see Elba in this kind of role — we know he’s an incredible actor, but I’m pumped to see him lean in fully into his comedic side, with what you can see is a seriously funny deadpan performance. At the end of the trailer, Cena asks him, “How are you alive?!” and Elba responds, “I just kept calm and carried on.” Let’s go!
What is ‘Heads of State’ about?

“Heads of State” kicks off with a coordinated terrorist attack that leaves former-movie star, and now U.S. President Will Derringer (John Cena) and UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke (Idris Elba) shaken — and suddenly cut off from their inner circles.
With security compromised and no one left to trust, the longtime political rivals are forced to rely on each other for survival. Their bickering has made headlines for years, but now they’ve got to work together to uncover a global conspiracy tied to the attack — and stop a shadowy foreign adversary before things spiral even further out of control.
Helping them stay one step ahead is MI6 agent Noel Bisset (Priyanka Chopra Jonas), a no-nonsense operative who’s clearly used to working alone — and has zero patience for two egotistical politicians playing action hero. As the trio zigzags across international borders trying to piece together what really happened, the movie is likely to lean hard into this buddy-comedy energy.
You’ve got car chases, shootouts, tense standoffs — and plenty of snarky one-liners flying between Cena and Elba, who don’t have a lot of respect for one another. Throw in Jack Quad as (it looks like to me) the classic “tech” guy with access to the underground armory, and I expect this movie to be loud, fast, and maybe just unhinged enough to work.
Who stars in the movie ‘Heads of State’?

“Heads of State” stars John Cena as U.S. President Will Derringer and Idris Elba as UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke — two world leaders who can’t stand each other but have to team up to save the world. Priyanka Chopra Jonas plays MI6 agent Noel Bisset, the only one with enough skill (and patience) to keep them alive. The supporting cast includes Jack Quaid, Paddy Considine, Stephen Root, Carla Gugino, Sarah Niles, and Steven Cree.
Who are the creators behind ‘Heads of State’?
“Heads of State” is directed by Ilya Naishuller, who’s no stranger to wild, fast-paced action — he’s the filmmaker behind the first-person adrenaline rush of “Hardcore Henry” and the Bob Odenkirk-led thriller “Nobody.” The screenplay is written by Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec, the duo behind action-heavy projects like “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” and the 2023 Netflix series “Cowboy Bebop,” along with original story credit going to Harrison Query.
Heads of State
The UK Prime Minister and US President have a public rivalry that risks their countries’ alliance. But when they become targets of a powerful enemy, they’re forced to rely on each other as they go on a wild, multinational run. Allied with Noel, a brilliant MI6 agent, they must find a way to thwart a conspiracy that threatens the free world.
