‘Spider-Noir’ turns Marvel’s web-slinger into a 1930s detective story
‘Spider-Noir’ turns Marvel’s web-slinger into a 1930s detective story
Nicolas Cage leads the new Marvel series set in Depression-era New York.
Nicolas Cage is finally suiting up as Spider-Man in live-action, and I couldn’t be more curious to see how this plays out. His new series “Spider-Noir” lands on MGM+ and Prime Video, and it’s a totally different kind of Marvel story: set in 1930s New York, where Cage plays an aging private eye wrestling with his past life as the city’s only superhero. The cool twist? You’ll be able to watch it in either black-and-white or color, giving the whole thing that pulpy, old-school noir vibe. With a heavyweight creative team and a cast stacked with names like Brendan Gleeson and Lamorne Morris, this is shaping up to be one of the most interesting comic-book shows in years. Here’s everything you need to know about “Spider-Noir.”
Everything you need to know about ‘Spider-Noir’:
When will episodes of ‘Spider-Noir’ come on MGM+
“Spider-Noir” doesn’t have a premiere date locked in yet, but we do know how it’ll roll out. It’ll air first on MGM+ in the U.S., then hit Prime Video the very next day — both here and in more than 240 countries. The series is planned as a limited run of eight episodes, each about 45 minutes long. It’s still in post-production, so a 2026 release is the most likely, though we don’t know yet if episodes will drop weekly or all at once. More soon!
Can you watch episodes of ‘Spider-Noir’ for free?
Sort of. MGM+ offers a seven-day free trial, so you could sign up when “Spider-Noir” premieres and catch the first episode without paying. After that, MGM+ costs $7 per month. If you’d rather watch on Prime Video, the show will be available there the day after it airs on MGM+. Prime offers a much longer 30-day free trial for new subscribers. After that, it’s $9 per month with ads or $12 per month ad-free, both with offline downloads and streaming on up to three devices at once.

What is ‘Spider-Noir’ about?
“Spider-Noir” is a noir-inspired Marvel series that takes Spider-Man in a totally different direction. Set in 1930s New York, it follows Nicolas Cage as an older, worn-down private investigator who used to be the city’s one and only superhero. Instead of the wisecracking web-slinger we’re used to, this version is darker and more grounded. It follows a man wrestling with his past as he digs into crime and corruption during one of the grittiest eras in the city’s history. The show leans into classic detective vibes, and you’ll even be able to watch it in black-and-white if you really want that old-school pulp feel.
At its core, the series isn’t just about taking down mob bosses and chasing villains through the shadows — it’s about a hero coming to terms with what his legacy means when the world has moved on without him. Cage plays a Spider-Man who’s haunted, flawed, and brutally human, which makes the story feel more like a hard-boiled crime drama than a traditional superhero show. With the city itself practically a character, filled with smoky jazz clubs, rain-soaked alleys, and Depression-era grit, “Spider-Noir” is aiming for a darker, moodier corner of the Marvel universe we haven’t seen on TV before.
Who stars in ‘Spider-Noir’?
The big draw here is Nicolas Cage, stepping into the trench coat as “Spider-Noir.” He plays an older, rough-around-the-edges detective in 1930s New York who also happens to be the city’s one-time superhero. Cage has voiced this character before in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” but this is his first time playing him in live action.
He’s joined by a stacked cast that includes Emmy winner Lamorne Morris, who’s playing Robbie Robertson, plus Oscar nominee Brendan Gleeson, Abraham Popoola, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, and Jack Huston in key roles. The guest lineup is loaded too, with names like Lukas Haas, Cameron Britton, Amanda Schull, Whitney Rice, and Amy Aquino popping up.
Who are the creators behind ‘Spider-Noir’?
“Spider-Noir” comes from a seriously impressive creative team. The series was developed by Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot, who also serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. They’ve got backup from the Oscar-winning trio Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal — the same team behind “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”
On the directing side, Emmy winner Harry Bradbeer (known for “Fleabag” and “Killing Eve”) is handling the first two episodes and executive producing as well. With that mix of writers, visionary producers, and a director who knows how to balance grit with style, “Spider-Noir” has the kind of pedigree that makes it stand out even in the crowded superhero TV space, mostly dominated by Disney+.
Is ‘Spider-Noir’ based on a comic book?
Yep, “Spider-Noir” comes straight from the Marvel comics. The character first showed up in 2009 in a series called “Spider-Man Noir,” which reimagined Spidey in a totally different world. Instead of swinging around modern New York after a science experiment gone wrong, this version is set in the 1930s, where Peter Parker gets his powers from a mystical spider. The vibe is darker and moodier. Think gangsters, smoky alleys, and a Spider-Man who carries a revolver and acts more like a private eye than a teenage jokester.
The show takes that same gritty setup and gives it new life with Nicolas Cage playing an older, washed-up investigator who still has to face the ghosts of his superhero past. It’s not a panel-for-panel retelling of the comics, but the big stuff is all there: the noir style, the Depression-era backdrop, and a Spider-Man who isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty.
Will there be a Season 2 of ‘Spider-Noir’?
For now, “Spider-Noir” is being made as a limited series. It’s planned as one story told across eight episodes, and neither MGM+ nor Prime Video has said anything about a second season. The idea seems to be a complete beginning-to-end arc rather than something open-ended. Of course, with a character this popular and Nicolas Cage leading the way, nothing’s ever totally off the table. If the show becomes a big hit, the door could always open for more. But as of now, it’s safest to go in expecting just one season.
