Fox Sports App to shut down on smart TVs

Fox Sports App to shut down on smart TVs

Fox wants more of its audience using the Fox One app on connected TV devices.

Known for breaking major streaming stories, he’s covered everything from Netflix policy shifts to Peacock’s ad-tier changes. A sci-fi fan and Toshiba Fire TV user, he brings sharp analysis and a love for the genre to his reporting.

It’s been a while since we got an update on the subscriber totals for the Fox One streaming service. First launched in August, Fox One is a platform designed to connect audiences to all of Fox’s top brands. It includes live content from Fox, FS1, FS2, Fox News, Fox Business Network, and other properties under the Fox corporate umbrella. A new report indicates that the company wants to push more viewers toward the Fox One app and will shut down the Fox Sports app on connected TVs to achieve that goal.

Key Details:

  • Into the sunset: Fox will shut down the Fox Sports app on smart TVs.
  • Reauthenticate: Viewers will have to log into the Fox One app, but access is included with most pay-TV plans.
  • Boost those numbers: As of November, Fox One had an estimated 2.3 million customers.

Awful Announcing reports that the company is shuttering the Fox Sports app on smart TVs and connected TV devices. The app will still be available on mobile devices, and the Fox Sports website will continue to work as it always has.

Customers will be steered, instead, toward the Fox One app on smart TV if they want to watch Fox content. Fox One allows authentication from all of the same pay-TV distributors as the Fox Sports app did, so anyone who gets Fox channels as part of their pay-TV plan can log in and use the Fox One app at no extra charge.

Still, the change means viewers will have to reauthenticate and will have to familiarize themselves with the Fox One user interface. The good news is that Fox One has a ton of great features, including multiview and other immersive options to take the sports-viewing experience to the next level.

The last time we got any kind of update about Fox One’s subscriber totals was in November, when Antenna estimated that the service had compiled 2.3 million customers. It’s fair to wonder if Fox One saw a major churn event at the end of football season, as many live TV streaming services do.

The move to shut down the Fox Sports app will help boost engagement with Fox One, though it won’t lead to many more subscriptions, since most viewers who were using the Fox Sports app regularly will have pay-TV credentials they can use with Fox One as well. Fox also distributes Fox One through Prime Video and other digital stores, maximizing distribution of the service.
