‘Frankenstein’ heading to very small number of theaters
The Netflix film will arrive in theaters in October, before a November streaming release.
Netflix is walking a very fine line when it comes to theatrical releases. By and large, the streamer swears off cinemas, professing often to be a streaming-first platform. But many awards like the Oscars and Golden Globes require a film to exhibit in theaters for at least seven consecutive days to be put up for consideration, and Netflix apparently feels it’s got a strong slate this year, considering the number of movies it has put into theaters or announced are heading that way of late. Viewers can now add another to the list; Netflix has announced that “Frankenstein” will stream in cinemas for a limited run next month.
Key Details:
- Very small footprint: “Frankenstein” is headed to a small number of IMAX screens.
- Three weeks early: The film is arriving in these theaters on Oct. 17.
- Promising start: Early reviews for the film are mostly quite positive.
As reported by Deadline, “Frankenstein” will be sent to IMAX theaters for a limited run at a small number of locations, per IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond. Specific numbers were not revealed, but Deadline reports the movie will get about 10 total screenings.
The film will go to cinemas around three weeks before it premieres on streaming. Its IMAX debut is slated for Oct. 17, and it will stream on Netflix for a global audience starting Nov. 7. It’s not a terribly long theatrical exclusive window to be sure, but that won’t be much comfort to Netflix subscribers who have eagerly anticipated the release and don’t have an IMAX in their area.
“Frankenstein” is a passion project of director Guillermo del Toro, and the cast assembled for the movie includes Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, and Christoph Waltz. The movie has received positive reviews from critics since premiering at the Venice Film Festival last month; it currently has an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Netflix has been in the headlines with plenty of theatrical news of late, considering its stance on releasing movies in theaters. It scored a big theatrical success with “KPop Demon Hunters,” and in early September announced “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” is also heading to cinemas for a limited engagement.
