Watch George Clooney in ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ live on Broadway

Watch George Clooney in ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ live on Broadway

For the first time ever, CNN will broadcast a Broadway performance live

With a background in sports and entertainment reporting, he’s covered everything from Broadway to college football. He cut the cord in 2014 and has a sharp eye for streaming trends and a soft spot for Hallmark movies.

History will be made on Saturday, June 7, as the five-time Tony-nominated production of “Good Night, and Good Luck” takes to the stage of the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway and is broadcast live on CNN. George Clooney leads the production as revered newsman Edward R. Murrow as he goes after Senator Joseph McCarthy during the Red Scare. The performance will begin at 7 p.m. ET on CNN and across the company’s platforms (CNN, CNN International, CNN.com, Max) without authentication required. Additionally, if you are looking to subscribe to a live TV streaming service that allows you to watch the broadcast, I recommend taking advantage of the 50% off deal from Sling TV.

How to watch ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ on Broadway

Everything you need to know about ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ on Broadway

Why do we recommend watching ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ on Broadway with Sling TV?

When it comes to finding a live TV streaming service that offers CNN at the best monthly rate, Sling TV is the best option. The cable news network comes standard on both of Sling’s base packages, so it gives cord-cutters the flexibility to find the perfect channel lineup for them.

Sling Orange tends to cater more toward sports fans, while Sling Blue has more entertainment options. Normally, Sling’s base plans costs $46 per month, but you can currently get 50% off your first month of service. This means that you can watch “Good Night, and Good Luck” on Broadway while also checking out everything else the service has to offer for the next month for as little as $23.

Since Sling has two different base packages, you can subscribe to one or both. If you do opt to combine Orange and Blue it will run you $61 monthly — still substantially cheaper than the comparable live TV streaming services — but with the first-month deal, you can stream everything on both packages for just $30.50.

Sling TV

Sling TV is The Streamable’s choice for cord-cutters on a budget. Sling is a live TV streaming service with multiple channel packages. The $45.99/month Sling Orange plan offers about 30 channels, including Disney Channel and ESPN. The $45.99/month Sling Blue plan offers about 40 channels, including ABC, Fox, and NBC in major markets.

You can combine Orange+Blue for a total of $60.99 / month. Sling also offers many channel add-on packages starting at $6/month.

Can you stream ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ on Broadway for free?

Yes, you can. Because of the timely, and dare I say precient, nature of the play, CNN is making the broadcast available across all of its platforms. That means that if you have access to either CNN or CNN International via a pay-TV subscription, then you are all set. Additionally, if you subscribe to the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service Max, it will stream live on that platform as well.

However, if you do not have access to any of those services, CNN is removing the TV Everywhere authentication requirements that normally are in place to watch CNN broadcasts on CNN.com and CNN’s mobile and streaming apps.

“Given the timely nature of the play—which is about standing up to fearmongering and disinformation in uncertain times—we feel it’s important for as many people to tune in to the broadcast as possible,” a CNN spokesperson told The Streamable.

If you are looking at “Good Night, and Good Luck” as a reason to test out a live TV streamer, then there are options available for you. DIRECTV, Hulu + Live TV, Fubo, and YouTube TV all offer free trials, but they vary in length, so be wary. DIRECTV’s industry-leading trial runs for five days, while Hulu + Live TV’s is a solid three days.

If you are solely interested in news programming, DIRECTV’s MyNews Genre Pack might be a good option for you. In addition to CNN, it also carries Bloomberg TV, CNBC, CNBC World, CNN International, C-SPAN, C-SPAN 2, Fox, Fox News, i24 News, MS NOW, NBC, and Newsmax.

While DIRECTV and Hulu + Live TV’s free trials are pretty straightforward, when it comes to the sports-minded streamer Fubo, things can get a little complicated. As The Streamable’s expert David Satin discovered when signing up for the services, figuring out how long Fubo’s trial is — even as you are signing up — can be a bit difficult. Nonetheless, it will be at least one day, with the potential to be as many as seven, depending on a wide range of factors that Fubo does not share publicly.

The YouTube TV trial is said to be “up to two weeks,” but can be as short as two days. So it is difficult to ascertain what you are actually getting before you go through the signup process.

If you are looking to watch the broadcast for free, I would recommend DIRECTV, because that streamer has the longest guaranteed free trial.

Watch a preview for ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ on Broadway

What is ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ on Broadway?

In this landmark theatrical and live television event, two-time Oscar winner and Tony nominee George Clooney makes his Broadway debut as iconic news anchor and reporter Edward R. Murrow. Along with Grant Heslov, Clooney — whose father was a local newscaster — wrote the original film of the same name, directed, and co-starred as producer Fred W. Friendly.

Now on Broadway and directed by David Cromer, Heslov and Clooney have adapted their script for the stage, and the actor has taken on the central role as the newsman who altered history by going after the junior senator from Wisconsin, Joseph McCarthy. As McCarthy’s fascist scare tactics gripped the country, Murrow and his news team confront the growing tide of paranoia and propaganda, even if it means turning the federal government and the nation against them.

The stage adaptation of the film uses historical archival footage from Murrow’s broadcasts and McCarthy’s hearings to create a realistic look at this resonant story that feels just as important today as when it actually happened.

“I can’t tell you how exciting it is to do something that’s never been done,” Clooney said. “CNN is the perfect place to bring this story of courage to so many more people than we could have ever hoped. Live TV. No net. Buckle up everyone.”

“Good Night, and Good Luck” will wrap up its Broadway run on Sunday, June 8, just hours before the Tony Awards, where the production is nominated for five awards, including won for Clooney in the Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play category. Also joining the A-lister on stage are Glenn Fleshler, Ilana Glazer, Clark Gregg, Paul Gross, Fran Kranz, Andrew Polk, and more.
