What is ‘Hamnet’ about?
The Oscar-nominated film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Maggie O’Farrell. It takes a fictional look at the love and loss in the relationship between William Shakespeare and his wife. When the two initially meet, Will (played by Paul Mescal) and Agnes (Oscar front-runner Jessie Buckley) fall madly in love. But her free-spirited and mystic connection to nature and her husband’s theatrical ambitions separate them.
With Will in London working on his shows, Agnes is back in Stratford raising their children. But when an unimaginable tragedy strikes, their relationship will be put to the test. The grief that envelops them both will test the fiber of their family, but also inspires the creation of one of the world’s most timeless pieces of literature.
“Hamnet” is currently nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Chloé Zhao, Best Actress for Buckley, Best Adapted Screenplay (for Zhao and O’Farrell), and more.
