Don’t miss the gritty Miami crime drama ‘M.I.A.’
The new Peacock series from the co-creator of ‘Ozark’ follows a woman pulled into her family’s drug operation in Miami’s criminal underworld.
There’s always a steady stream of crime dramas coming out, so it can be tough to cut through the noise. But Peacock’s new show, “M.I.A.” has my attention. This one comes from Bill Dubuque, who co-created “Ozark” with Mark Williams, which, for me, is one of the best crime dramas of the past decade. Add in a Miami setting, a family-run drug operation, and a story about someone getting pulled deeper and deeper into a dangerous world, and this feels very much in that lane. You can check out “M.I.A.” with a subscription to Peacock.

What is ‘M.I.A.’ about?
“M.I.A.” follows Etta Tiger Jonze, a woman stuck in the Florida Keys who’s dreaming of something bigger… a dream life in Miami. But she’s not starting from scratch. Her family is already in the drug business, and when that world falls apart in a pretty major way, she gets pulled straight into the chaos. From there, the show tracks her as she moves through Miami’s criminal underworld, figuring out how far she’s willing to go and who she’s willing to become to survive.
The Miami setting is a big part of the appeal here, and what’s cool is that the show actually filmed there, which doesn’t happen that often. A lot of “Miami” shows fake it somewhere else, but this one leans into the real thing, which should give it a very specific vibe. Between the neon nightlife, the heat, and that mix of glamour and danger, it feels like the kind of backdrop that can carry a story like this in a really fun way.

Who stars in ‘M.I.A.’?
The series is led by Shannon Gisela as Etta, and she’s surrounded by a pretty stacked ensemble cast that includes Cary Elwes, Danay Garcia, Brittany Adebumola, Dylan Jackson, Alberto Guerra, Maurice Compte, Gerardo Celasco, and Marta Milans. And yeah, I have to call out Cary Elwes specifically because I’ll pretty much watch anything he shows up in. Whether you know him from “The Princess Bride” or “Robin Hood: Men in Tights,” he’s just one of those actors who instantly adds something fun and a little unpredictable to whatever he’s in.
Who created ‘M.I.A.’?
“M.I.A.” is created by Bill Dubuque who also writes and executive produces the series, including the first and final episodes of the season. Karen Campbell serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, bringing experience from shows like “Outlander” and “Dexter.”
