The latest DCU film arrives on HBO Max on Thursday following an underwhelming showing in the theaters.

In “Supergirl,” Kara Zor-El abandons her listless life, galavanting across the galaxy to set off on a journey to find the dastardly villains who poisoned her beloved pooch, Krypto. While the movie didn’t make major waves at the summer box office, it has steadily picked up fans in the subsequent months. The film now arrives on HBO Max on Thursday, Sept. 10, where it will stream alongside other DC titles, including “Superman” (which introduced the character of Kara) and the (very different) 1984 “Supergirl” movie. When and where will ‘Supergirl’ stream?
Since “Supergirl,” like all DCU movies and TV shows, is produced and distributed by Warner Bros. Discovery, it will stream exclusively on HBO Max. The latest big-screen superhero flick will arrive on the streamer on Thursday, Sept. 10, just one day before The Streamable’s chief movie-window prognosticator, David Satin, predicted when “Supergirl” hit theaters in June.

HBO Max is a subscription video streaming service that gives access to the full HBO library and exclusive Max Originals. There are hubs for content from TLC, HGTV, Food Network, Discovery, TCM, Cartoon Network, Travel Channel, ID, and more. Can you watch ‘Supergirl’ for free?
Technically, no… but also yes. HBO Max does not currently offer a free trial, so going directly through the streamer will not give you any options to stream it for free. That is enough time to watch “Supergirl” more than 66 times, so if you are dying to see the film for free, this is a pretty good option if you don’t mind jumping through a few hoops.

What you need to know about ‘Supergirl’
In “Supergirl,” fans pick back up with Kara Zor-El, played by Milly Alcock, as she cruises the universe on her 23rd birthday. She doesn’t feel terribly connected to Earth, her cousin Kal-El, or anything else in particular, having escaped Krypton before its destruction. That is, of course, except for her beloved dog Krypto. But when this Kryptonian’s best friend is poisoned, Kara launches a quest for vengeance and won’t let anyone stop her from getting justice.
The film has received mixed reviews from critics, with it earning a rotten 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but a 72% from audience members. The general consensus is that while Alcock shines in the role of Kara Zor-El, the film itself is a little too shaggy and meandering to have much of an emotional punch. The addition of Jason Momoa as the antihero Lobo to the cast feels a bit forced for many of the critics.
The film grossed over $126 million around the world, far under its reported $185 million budget, not including monies spent on this summer’s promotional campaign. However, now that it is arriving on streaming, more people will have the opportunity to catch the film, and hopefully turn what was a bit of a disappointment at the box office into something of a cult hit.
With Momoa playing Lobo, the actor returns to the DC universe after a stint as Aquaman in the Snyder-verse. Additionally, Eve Ridley plays Ruthye Marye Knoll, and David Corenswet reprises his role as Superman in the film.
