On the other side, almost no one outside of Tempe is giving ASU much of a chance, but the Sun Devils are led by one of the best running backs in the country. Texas vs. Arizona State game breakdown
This College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup pits two explosive offenses against each other, with the winner advancing to the semifinals to play the winner of the Rose Bowl between Ohio State and Oregon. The Longhorns, led by quarterback Quinn Ewers, boast a potent rushing attack that amassed 292 yards in their first-round victory over Clemson. However, there has been substantial debate around Austin about whether backup QB Arch Manning might give UT a better chance of winning a national title.
That discussion will likely have to wait for another week as the Horns will face a tough test against an Arizona State defense that has been stingy all season. The Sun Devils, under the guidance of Big 12 Coach of the Year Kenny Dillingham, are making their CFP debut after a dominant run through the Big 12, culminating in a 45-19 thrashing of Iowa State in the conference championship game. However, college football analysts are suspect about whether the relative weakness of the Big 12 could actually prepare ASU for a team like Texas.
Arizona State’s balanced offense presents a unique challenge for the Longhorns. Running back Cam Skattebo has been a force all season, rushing for over 1,500 yards and 19 touchdowns. Quarterback Sam Leavitt provides a complementary threat through the air, throwing for over 2,600 yards with an impressive 24 touchdowns to just five interceptions. The Sun Devils’ ability to control the clock with Skattebo while keeping defenses honest with Leavitt’s passing makes them a difficult opponent to contain. Texas will need to rely on its stellar defensive front to disrupt the Sun Devils’ rhythm and force turnovers.
The key matchup to watch will be the Texas run defense against Arizona State’s Skattebo. If the Longhorns can contain Skattebo, they’ll have a good chance of advancing. However, if the Sun Devils can establish the run and control the tempo, they could pull off the upset and continue their Cinderella season.
Heading into the game Vegas bookmakers have installed UT as 13.5-point favorites and have set the total points line at 51.5. So they are projecting an estimated score of 33 to 19 in favor of the Longhorns.
