MLB.TV went down at the worst possible time on Opening Day
Opening Day jitters for MLB.TV left many fans in the dark for over an hour.
It was a worst-case scenario for MLB.TV as the service was down for users worldwide, leaving them in the dark for the start of many games today. With 28 of 30 teams playing Thursday to kick off the 2025 MLB season, it couldn’t have been worse timing for the league’s live streaming platform. Users reported issues starting at about 3 p.m. ET and were unable to stream any live games through the app for over an hour.
Key Details
- MLB.TV, which offers live streams of MLB games, was down for over an hour today
- Users all over the world reported network error issues and slow load times
- Service was restored shortly after 4:30 p.m. ET
Like plenty of other baseball fans worldwide, I was patiently waiting for the 2025 MLB season to start. However, taking in a live game didn’t appear to be in the cards at the 4:10 p.m. start time, as MLB TV was down for everyone. While the app seemingly started to load live games, it was littered with slow navigation times and network errors — and no actual live streams. At first, I thought it might be my fresh SNY subscription within the app, which is a first for 2025, but after a quick chat with colleagues and friends, I confirmed the service was totally down, keeping users from watching any live games.
A quick look at Down Detector showed a huge spike that started around 3:30 p.m. ET today and had close to 23,000 reported issues around 4 p.m. ET, ranging everywhere from Texas to Australia. It wasn’t until after 4:30 p.m. ET that service was fully restored, letting users stream live games and other content within the app or through the MLB.TV website.
Hopefully, there will be no more issues for MLB.TV going forward, but this certainly wasn’t a great start to the 2025 season for many fans. Were you affected by the outage? Let us know in the comments!
