Monumental Sports Network blacked out on 2 streamers

Hulu + Live TV and YouTube TV customers in the area of Washington D.C. have lost access to the regional sports network.

Monumental Sports Network is now blacked out on Hulu + Live TV and YouTube TV.

It’s been a rough start to October for some pay-TV customers around the United States, particularly YouTube TV customers. That service barely dodged a major blackout with NBCUniversal, and didn’t avoid one with TelevisaUnivision, causing the Univision channel to be pulled from its airwaves. Now, customers of that streaming service, as well as Hulu + Live TV, are going to have to say goodbye to another channel: Monumental Sports Network, the regional sports network that distributes the Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards to fans in the nation’s capital.

Key Details:

  • As promised: Monumental released a statement last week warning that a blackout was looming.
  • Clock is ticking: The NBA and NHL seasons start in less than a month.
  • Alternatives exist: DIRECTV also carries Monumental Sports Network, and fans can watch on Monumental+ as well.

The blackout of Monumental Sports Network on Hulu + Live TV and YouTube TV should come as no surprise to customers. The channel put out a statement last week indicating that a carriage dispute was building, and that it would be blacked out on YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV unless the two sides could be convinced to meet its terms.

That has not happened, and there’s a possibility the two streamers never come back to the table. Regional sports networks have less leverage than giant channel conglomerates like Comcast and Fox, since their audience is so much smaller. They don’t have the negotiating power to compel distributors to make the most favorable terms, despite the popular teams that play on them.

“We are incredibly disappointed for our fans that YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV have chosen to drop Monumental Sports Network and leave DMV-area sports fans without access to Capitals, Wizards, Mystics, and other local games just as the Capitals and Wizards seasons are about to begin,” Monumental said in a statement. “We offered — and will continue to offer — both YouTube TV and Hulu numerous fair deals filled with economic concessions to keep our programming accessible, but neither platform meaningfully engaged with our proposals, and we never received a written counterproposal from either.”

The timing of the blackout is tough for D.C.-area sports fans who are anticipating the beginning of the Capitals and Wizards seasons. The Capitals start their season against the Boston Bruins on Oct. 8 — though their first game on Monumental isn’t scheduled until Oct. 11, when they face the New York Rangers. The Wizards open the 2025-26 NBA season on Oct. 22 against the Milwaukee Bucks.

“Unfortunately, this isn’t just about YouTube TV’s and Hulu’s disregard for D.C. sports fans,” the regional sports provider said. “Their decisions to walk away reflect a troubling reality in the pay-TV industry: independent regional sports networks like Monumental are being squeezed out by large, multinational streaming companies using anti-competitive tactics. Hulu, owned by Disney, and YouTube TV, owned by Google, are following a similar pattern, sacrificing the interests of local communities while seeking to consolidate control over sports programming. These platforms simply do not value our fans or the role regional sports play in their communities.”

There are a couple ways to watch Monumental in the channel’s TV footprint outside of YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV. The DIRECTV CHOICE plan — starting at $90 per month — carries Monumental, and can be streamed through the devices you already have at home. You can also stream games live on the Monumental+ app, costing $20 per month.

This article was updated to clarify that the Capitals don’t play their first game on Monumental Sports Network until Oct. 11.

  • Monumental+

Monumental Sports Network’s app includes in-market access to live games for the NHL’s Washington Capitals, the NBA’s Washington Wizards, and the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, among other live games and original programs. Current viewers who access the network’s channel through a Pay TV provider will continue to be able to watch Monumental Sports Network the same way as before, as well as via Monumental Sports Network’s newly launched digital platform with no additional fees.

    …

The app includes access to multiple camera angles during live home games, with additional functionality including the ability to rewind and watch in slow motion.

The app also features Sportradar integrations providing users with advanced, real-time sports data and betting analytics.

  • Hulu Live TV

Hulu Live TV is a live TV streaming service with more than 70 channels for $89.99 per month. Hulu + Live TV base plan includes local channels 32 of the top 35 cable channels, and regional sports networks (RSNs). Subscribers get free access to Disney+ and ESPN Select at no extra charge.

    …

Where it really separates itself is value. Your subscription doesn’t just cover live TV — it also includes full access to Hulu’s on-demand library, plus bundled subscriptions to Disney+ and ESPN Select content at no extra cost. That means you’re getting everything from next-day network TV episodes and Hulu Originals, to Marvel, Star Wars, and live sports content all in one place without juggling multiple bills.

For sports fans, Hulu + Live TV also includes regional sports networks (RSNs) in select areas, a feature many competing services have dropped. That can be a big deal if you’re trying to follow local MLB, NBA, or NHL teams.

The DVR experience is another strong point. Subscribers get unlimited cloud DVR storage and the ability to fast-forward through commercials on recorded content — a feature that used to cost extra but is now standard. It’s designed to feel closer to a traditional cable DVR, just without the box.

If you want to customize further, several add-ons are available. You can upgrade to premium channels like HBO, Showtime, or Starz, add an unlimited streams option for households with lots of viewers, or go ad-free on Hulu’s on-demand content (live TV will still include ads).

Overall, Hulu + Live TV is less about being the cheapest option and more about being the most comprehensive. It’s built for people who want live TV, on-demand shows, and bundled streaming services all under one roof — without having to piece everything together themselves.

  • YouTube TV

YouTube TV is a live TV streaming service with more than 60 channels for $82.99/month. This plan includes local channels 32 of the top 35 cable channels, and regional sports networks (RSNs) in select markets. The base plan includes more than 100 live channels, including major broadcast networks like ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC, as well as popular cable channels such as ESPN, CNN, FX, USA Network, and TNT. Local channels are included in most markets, making YouTube TV a full replacement for traditional cable for many viewers.

    …

Sports are a major focus for YouTube TV, with access to national and regional coverage, league networks, and marquee events. The service also serves as the exclusive home of NFL Sunday Ticket, available as an add-on, giving fans access to out-of-market Sunday afternoon games. YouTube TV also offers a smaller sports plan, allowing subscribers access to 30+ sports-oriented channels, including local networks in select markets.

YouTube TV includes unlimited cloud DVR storage at no extra cost, allowing subscribers to record as many shows as they want and keep recordings for up to nine months. The service is available across a wide range of devices, including smart TVs, streaming players, mobile devices, and web browsers. New subscribers can typically start with a free trial, though the trial length may vary by promotion.

With its broad channel lineup, strong sports offerings, unlimited DVR, and wide device support, YouTube TV remains one of the most comprehensive live TV streaming services for viewers who want a traditional TV experience without a cable contract.

New customers can save $15 per month for 5 months.
