Netflix eyeing deals with video podcasters
The streaming service has an eye toward reducing content costs while simultaneously looking for new audiences.
Netflix may have surpassed 300 million subscribers in its latest quarterly earnings report, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to rest on its laurels. The world’s largest streamer has an increased willingness to pursue live programming and sports, opening it up to more streaming options, but a new report indicates Netflix is continuing to expand its content ambitions even further. According to Business Insider, Netflix is looking into potentially making investments in another rapidly growing entertainment segment: video podcasts.
Key Details:
- Netflix has increasingly warmed to the idea of having podcast talent host a talk show for it, according to agents.
- The streamer reportedly looked into a deal with Alex Cooper of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast.
- Edison Research found 89% of Gen-Z podcast listeners streamed a podcast with video in 2024.
Once reluctant to add creator-driven content, Netflix’s philosophy on podcasters has continued to evolve. In recent months, talent agents who spoke with Business Insider say that Netflix is now at least willing to consider hosting podcasters in some capacity.
“More recently they are exploring: Is this doable? Which one would make sense for us? They ask about specific names,” one agent said. “It’s a way to get an amazing volume of content at a fraction of what they pay for scripted and unscripted budgets.”
Business Insider also reports that in 2024, Netflix explored a deal with Alex Cooper, host of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast. Cooper eventually signed a deal with SiriusXM instead, but at the very least, it demonstrates that Netflix is serious about bringing popular podcast hosts to its platform.
Podcasts are increasingly influential among audiences, and video podcasts have a large following. Business Insider cites a report from Edison Research which states that in 2024, 89% of Gen-Z podcast listeners consumed a podcast with a video element, and Netflix isn’t the only company taking notice. Fox announced this week that it had purchased the conservative podcast producer Red Seat Ventures, potentially with an eye on including the content on its existing and/or forthcoming streamers.
Whether Netflix wants a talk show-style series featuring a podcast host or exclusive rights to a podcast itself, it’s clear the company is looking to expand into the space in some capacity. Keep an eye on Netflix in the near future as it attempts to find its way into the podcast space.
