Netflix will host Rousey vs. Carano as streamer’s first MMA event
The streamer’s first live MMA bout will lure both Rousey and Carano out of retirement.
Netflix made a lot of sense as the next possible destination for UFC fights, and TKO Holdings eventually decided to take the marquee mixed martial arts events to Paramount+, the world’s largest streamer isn’t simply giving up on the idea of offering even more combat sports. On Tuesday, Netflix announced that it would stream an MMA bout between UFC legends Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano this spring.
Key Details:
- We’re back: Rousey and Carano are exiting retirement to participate in the fight on Netflix.
- Spring into action: The fight will be held on May 16.
- Building success: The good performance of live boxing matches on Netflix has led the streamer to seek more.
Rousey and Carano will both exit retirement for the fight, which will be held on Netflix on Saturday, May 16. It will be the first MMA event in Netflix history, and will see two of the biggest names in MMA history to help make the evening a can’t-miss event for fight fans.
“After the record-breaking success in boxing, we wanted our first MMA event to be truly legendary,” Netflix VP of sports Gabe Spitzer said. “These are more than just athletes — they are generational stars, and having them headline our MMA debut at the Intuit Dome is a defining moment for us.”
Rousey (12-2, 9 submissions, 3 KOs) and Carano (7-1, 1 submission, 3 KOs) will both compete at 145 pounds. A fight between the two has been discussed before, but has never been officially scheduled until now. The fight will be contested over five 5-minute rounds, per the Unified Rules of MMA.
“Been waiting so long to announce this,” Rousey said. “Me and Gina Carano are gonna throw down in the biggest superfight in women’s combat sport history, and we’re partnering with the fighter-first promoter, MVP, as well as the baddest streamer on the planet, Netflix. This is for all MMA fans past, present, and future.”
The fight will be available to stream on all Netflix plans, starting with the streamer’s Standard with Ads plan for $8 per month. It has a strong chance to break the record set by the Taylor vs. Serano boxing match, which was also presented on Netflix.
“This is an honor,” Carano said. “I believe I will walk out of this fight with the win, and I anticipate it will not come easy, which I welcome. This is as much for Ronda and I as it is for the fans and mixed martial arts community. What a time to be alive.”
