New Amazon Fire TV user interface on the way

New Amazon Fire TV user interface on the way

Amazon says its new Fire TV interface will help viewers find content faster and browse less.

Known for breaking major streaming stories, he’s covered everything from Netflix policy shifts to Peacock’s ad-tier changes. A sci-fi fan and Toshiba Fire TV user, he brings sharp analysis and a love for the genre to his reporting.

Trying to find a new TV show or movie to watch can be challenging enough. Having a poor user interface experience with which to find those titles is maddening indeed, and Amazon knows it full well. That’s why the company announced on Monday that it was preparing to roll out a new user interface for Fire TV devices, including the Fire TV mobile app, to help viewers stop browsing and start watching more easily.

Key Details:

  • Next few weeks: The new Fire TV update is launching in February.
  • Mobile, too: The Fire TV mobile app will soon allow viewers to browse content, manage their playlist, and more.
  • New hardware: An all-new TV called the Amazon Ember Artline will soon launch, as well.

The new Fire TV user interface will add a shortcut panel that viewers can access by long-pressing the Home button on their remote. It will offer access to your most frequently used controls on Fire TV, including settings, connected doorbell cameras, smart home management, and more.

Additionally, the new UX will allow viewers to pin up to 20 apps on their home screen, up from the six that can now be added. Pressing the Menu button will pull up shortcuts to Games, Art & Photos, and the Fire TV Ambient experience once the update is live. The new interface will also feature a more modern design, optimized spacing, and redesigned color gradients.

Amazon says that in some cases, browsing time has been cut by 20% to 30% with the new Fire TV experience. The updated UX will be available to all Fire TV customers starting in February at no extra charge, though users will have to be Alexa+ or Prime subscribers to use the embedded Alexa+ features in the interface.

If a new user interface wasn’t enough for Amazon fans, the company also announced on Monday that it was launching another line of smart TVs later this spring. The Amazon Ember Artline TV is a 4K QLED set with support for Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and Wi-Fi 6, and is specifically intended to help viewers turn their living room into a beautiful art gallery.

The Artline’s screen is designed to reduce glare in any lighting conditions, and its Omnisense technology turns the Fire TV Ambient Experience on automatically when people enter or leave a room. It includes more than 2,000 pieces of free art, and even comes with a choice of one of 10 adjustable color frames. The Ember Artline model will come in sizes from 55 to 65 inches, starting at $900.
