‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ Smashes Records on Peacock, Scares Up $136 Million Opening Weekend at Box Office

The new adaptation of the beloved video game franchise is now available to stream, as well as watch in theaters.

Five Nights at Freddy's” is a streaming sensation. The new movie, which was released on Peacock and in theaters on Friday, Oct. 27 is doing gangbusters in cinemas, but it’s also proven to be a juggernaut for the streaming platform that it calls home.

  • ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ is the most-watched series or movie through its first five days on Peacock of any title in the service’s history.
  • The movie was a day-and-date release on Peacock and has also managed to accrue more than $135 million at the global box office.
  • ‘FNAF’ stars Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, and Piper Rubio.

Five Nights, Five-Day Record

“Five Nights at Freddy’s” is based on the horror video game genre of the same name. The film stars Josh Hutcherson as Mike, a down-on-his-luck security guard who is desperate for work so he can care for his sister Abby (Piper Rubio). He takes a job at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, but he doesn’t know that the restaurant’s animatronic performers come alive at night, on the hunt for blood.

According to Deadline, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is the most-watched film or TV series ever on Peacock after its first five days. As usual, NBCUniversal declined to provide hard numbers for how many users actually watched the movie, but considering it passed hyped-up titles like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Bel-Air,” it’s a good bet that the real numbers are indeed impressive.

The film also went to theaters, and considering the generally lackluster box office in 2023 thus far, it did well. “Five Nights” accrued $136 million in its opening weekend in cinemas, and though it may not have a great deal of staying power since it’s also available to stream on Peacock, the haul is nevertheless impressive for a day-and-date release film.

What Else is Available to Stream on Peacock?

This isn’t the first day-and-date release Peacock has experimented with, particularly around Halloween. In 2022, NBCUniversal decided to sendHalloween Ends” to theaters and streaming on Oct. 14. That movie also ended up leading the box office in its first week in theaters, but at that time The Streamable predicted its success wouldn’t spell the end of day-and-date releases for Peacock.

The streamer has a wide variety of spooky movies to enjoy, like “FNAF,” “Halloween Ends” and many more. If thrillers aren’t exactly your speed, you can find content from every genre in Peacock’s library, from the “Mario” movie to reality series like the “Real Housewives” franchise and absolutely everything in between.

Peacock is also one of the top streaming destinations for live sports. The service carries NFL football every week via “Sunday Night Football,” and will soon be offering Big Ten basketball games in addition to that conference’s football games, which have been available on Peacock since September. The platform will also host every event of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, amidst a myriad of other sports selections.
