Is Ethan Coen’s New Movie ‘Drive-Away Dolls’ Streaming Now? When Will it Head to Peacock?

The heist comedy is making its way into theaters now, but it’s not likely to take too long to hit NBCUniversal’s streamer.

Ethan Coen’s solo directorial debut is here! The beloved auteur helmed and co-wrote his latest project “Drive-Away Dolls” without his brother and filmmaking partner Joel. The hardnosed caper made its official theatrical debut in the United States on Friday, Feb. 23 and it is the type of road trip/crime story that only a Coen could create. “Drive Away Dolls” is not available to stream yet, but we have a pretty good idea of when it will be.

  • “Drive-Away Dolls” is led by Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan and features by Pedro Pascal, Matt Damon, and Miley Cyrus.
  • The film is being distributed by Focus Features, whose parent company is Universal Pictures.
  • That means the movie will likely head to Peacock once it’s done in theaters, but when?

The movie centers on a pair of lesbian friends who decide to take a road trip to escape the stresses of work and lost love. But when they accidentally wind up in possession of a briefcase sought after by murderous gangsters, their trip takes on a whole new character. Dodging thugs and blackmailing senators as they adventure their way across the United States, the two still find time to get to know each other better as well.

The film has a 66% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, respectable but a far cry from some other films sprung from the minds of the Coen brothers. Critics had special praise for the chemistry of lead actresses Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan, which carry the movie.

When Will ‘Drive-Away Dolls’ Be Streaming?

“Drive-Away Dolls” would be a perfect movie to stream back-to-back with other Cohen brothers films for comparison, since it’s the first time Ethan Cohen is attempting to direct a movie without Joel. Since “Drive-Away Dolls” is a theatrical exclusive, however, it’s not yet available to stream from the comforts of home.

The good news is, that determining where the film will stream once it’s done in theaters is easy. Focus Features is distributing “Drive-Away Dolls,” and since that company is owned by Universal, which is in turn owned by NBCUniversal, it’s overwhelmingly likely that the movie will stream on Peacock when the company feels it can no longer get meaningful ticket or premium rental revenues from the film.

There’s also good news for viewers who don’t want the movie to take long before heading to Peacock. NBCU has followed a remarkably similar release pattern for many of its films over the past year; “Cocaine Bear,” “Violent Night” and “M3GAN” all took 49 days to head to Peacock after their theatrical debuts. “Oppenheimer” took a whopping 209 days to reach Peacock after its premiere in cinemas, but that movie became a powerhouse among critics and audiences, and is a serious contender for the Academy Award for Best Picture this year.

Since we don’t expect “Drive-Away Dolls” to rise to the popularity of “Oppenheimer,” The Streamable predicts that it will follow the same pattern as Universal releases and spend 49 days in theaters before becoming available on Peacock. That would pin its arrival date on the streamer as Friday, April 12, making it the perfect way to have a spring fling at home.
