Netflix to stream MLB Opening Day game between Giants, Yankees
Netflix to stream MLB Opening Day game between Giants, Yankees
Netflix was already slated to receive the Home Run Derby starting next year, and has added another big-name event to its slate.
Lest you were worried that Netflix wouldn’t get any live MLB games when the league is finally ready to reveal which media partners will get which pieces of ESPN’s former rights package, I’m here to allay your fears. On Thursday, reports emerged that indicated that Netflix will get the rights to stream an Opening Day MLB game between two of the league’s major clubs.
Key Details:
- Safe at home: Netflix will stream the San Francisco Giants vs. New York Yankees on Opening Day 2026.
- Only game in town: The rest of the MLB doesn’t play until the following day.
- Not just a game: Netflix is also getting the Home Run Derby starting in 2026.
As first reported by The Athletic, Netflix is getting the rights to stream the New York Yankees at San Francisco Giants game on March 25, 2026. It marks the first time the streamer has offered a live MLB game, and MLB becomes the second of the top leagues in the United States to play a live regular season game on Netflix after the NFL.
The Opening Day stream will fit right in with Netflix’s desire to only pursue sports that it can turn into a big-time viewing event. The game is the only one airing on March 25; the rest of the league is set to begin play on March 26, so Netflix, the Giants, and the Yankees will have the spotlight all to themselves.
MLB and Netflix have a three-year agreement overall, and is expected to “share a handful of special location event regular-season games” with Peacock going forward, including the “Field of Dreams” and “MLB Speedway” games that have been broadcast by Fox in the past.
Netflix is also getting the rights to stream the Home Run Derby, which it inherited after ESPN surrendered those rights in February. Peacock will also get a portion of those rights, and ESPN will re-enter the fold with new game inventory, including rights to distribute out-of-market games on the league’s behalf.
Netflix has been making plenty of moves in the sports world of late. It was reported this week that the streamer tried to steal the annual USC Trojans vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish game broadcast this year, and also secured World Baseball Classic rights in Japan. Netflix’s name keeps popping up as an interested party for sports rights bidding, and now, it’s got another big-name event on its roster, in the form of the Opening Day game between the Yankees and Giants in 2026.
