NHL Stadium Series game sets records for ESPN
The game between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Boston Bruins became the most-viewed NHL game on ESPN in years.
An open-air hockey game…in Florida? Not only did the NHL attempt it, but the league saw impressive results from doing so. On Feb. 1, the Tampa Bay Lightning hosted the Boston Bruins at Raymond James Stadium. The game featured plenty of action, including a goalie fight, and new ratings data reveal that fans rewarded the host channel ESPN with record viewership.
Key Details:
- Cable triumph: The Bruins/Lightning game was the most-viewed regular season NHL game ever on cable.
- Good luck: The game was also the most-watched regular season NHL contest overall in seven years.
- Wise move: The Lightning formerly saw local games broadcast on a FanDuel SN channel, but have since moved on.
According to new ratings data first reported by the Tampa Bay Times, the Stadium Series game between the Lightning and Bruins was the most-viewed regular-season NHL game ever to appear on cable television. The game was broadcast on ESPN, where it averaged 2.1 million viewers.
The contest was also the most-viewed NHL regular season game since the 2019 Winter Classic between the Bruins and the Chicago Blackhawks. Viewership jumped by 30% over last year’s Stadium Series game, and no doubt many viewers tuned in to enjoy the novelty of an outdoor hockey game in Florida.
Unfortunately, the data does not break out how many fans tuned in to see the game on the linear ESPN channel versus how many watched on the new ESPN Unlimited direct-to-consumer service. ESPN Unlimited gives audiences streaming access to sporting events on ESPN cable channels without a pay-TV subscription, starting at $30 per month.
The game was broadcast on a national channel, but the inclusion of the Tampa Bay Lightning underscores how precarious local broadcasting arrangements are for many NHL teams at the moment. Until the 2025-26 season, the Lightning played their local games on a FanDuel Sports Network regional sports channel. Those channels are owned by Main Street Sports Group, which is once again facing dire financial trouble as it tries to convince teams to accept lower fees for their broadcast rights. Tampa Bay gets to sidestep that mess, however, having switched to an over-the-air partnership with Scripps for the current season.
ESPN Unlimited
ESPN launched its highly anticipated direct-to-consumer streaming service on August 21, 2025. For the first time, this service gives sports fans access to its full lineup of linear channels without a traditional cable or satellite subscription.
