Peacock Set to Add Multiview Feature for 2024 English Premier League Season
The streamer first rolled out multiview for the 2024 Summer Olympics, and the president of NBC Sports said it was likely to stay for EPL soccer.
It’s August, and that means the return of English Premier League soccer is right around the corner. The 2024 EPL season starts on Friday, Aug. 16, and the best way for American fans to stream the league is with a subscription to Peacock. This year, EPL fans will get a brand-new way to watch matches on the service: multiview. NBC Sports officials gathered on a conference call on Thursday to discuss ratings for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris and took the opportunity to reveal that Peacock would offer its new multiview feature during this Premier League season.
Key Details:
- NBC Sports president Rick Cordella said multiview was likely to roll out for Premier League coverage.
- Another NBCUniversal exec hinted that multiview could be used for non-sports events, as well.
- Peacock added its first EPL alternate broadcast in 2023 and continues to build out its coverage.
Peacock first introduced multiview for the 2024 Olympics. The feature allows viewers to watch up to four live events at a time, in pre-selected packages based around themes like “Top Events” or “Team Sports.” At this time, there is no way to swap events in and out of multiview or customize the order of viewing windows.
Even without the customization ability, the addition of multiview has made for a better Olympic experience overall on Peacock. NBC Sports president Rick Cordella had the chance to talk about technical improvements on Peacock during the games on Thursday and pointed to multiview as a specific example of upgrades that could stay after the Olympics conclude.
“Multiview” is an easy one,” Cordell said. “We released it just at the start of these Games. You’re likely to see it in Premier League coverage on Saturday mornings. That’s one we invested in.”
Chairman of NBCUniversal Media Group Mark Lazarus hinted that multiview could be available for non-sporting events on Peacock, as well.
“This, I think, is going to be an excellent set of data to use that we will certainly deploy against not only other sports properties but look at other live events that NBCUniversal has on our calendar,” Lazarus said. “We are a company that’s rich in big live events certainly around the holidays, with Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and Christmas at Rockefeller Center. Some of these technologies can be deployed against other live events and we’ll continue to experiment.”
Peacock is already a fantastic way to enjoy Premier League soccer. The streamer surrounds EPL games with plenty of coverage, including studio shows to analyze the action, full-game replays that become available on demand after matches finish, and access to the Premier League TV channel.
Last season, Peacock unveiled its first-ever alternate broadcast for EPL matches. The stream is called “Data Zone,” and pulls up real-time statistics about players and teams, a movement tracker for players, shot speed graphics, and more.
Multiview has become an increasingly popular way to watch live sports. YouTube TV made its multiview customizable for the first time ahead of the 2024 NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament, and Fubo has long offered a multiview option. The new Venu Sports joint venture streaming platform will also offer a multiview function when it launches this fall.
