Peacock’s biggest 2025 story: launch of NBC Sports Network
The re-introduction of the network can definitely be interpreted as a trouble sign for the streaming service.
For Peacock, 2025 was indeed a year of change, and certainly some growth. The streamer’s parent company, NBCUniversal, welcomed NBA broadcasts back to its platforms for the first time in years in 2025, and Peacock was a beneficiary of that addition; the streamer gets to air all games appearing on NBC, and gets some exclusive games of its own as well.
For the third year in a row, Peacock grew in price in 2025 as well. The streamer now costs more than $10 per month to stream with ads and all sports, and while profitability remains elusive, it’s easy to see the steps Peacock is taking to get there. Are those steps enough? NBCUniversal may need a little extra juice in that regard, if the launch of the new NBC Sports Network is any indication.
Formerly, NBC Sports Network was a cable sports channel set up to rival the likes of ESPN and FS1. But the new version of the channel serves a very different purpose: one of its primary goals is to help distribute sporting events otherwise found exclusively on Peacock, helping to widen the audience for those events.
The channel launched first on YouTube TV on Nov. 17, and is making its way to other distributors as well. Its very existence could be interpreted as a big admission by NBCU that it isn’t getting the amount of viewership it wants on Peacock, despite the large amount of live sports available there.
That inventory includes the NFL’s “Sunday Night Football,” the aforementioned NBA inventory now found on NBC and Peacock, Big East and Big Ten basketball games, Big Ten and Notre Dame football, NASCAR races, English Premier League soccer, the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics, and a lot more. It’s not just quantity that Peacock offers when it comes to the streamer’s live sports inventory; it’s got plenty of quality as well.
But for all that sports availability, Peacock has seemingly plateaued from a subscriber perspective. The third quarter of 2025 ended with Peacock having 41 million paid customers, the same number it had in Q2 and Q1. Even the promise of live NBA games and the return of the NFL didn’t inspire a new influx of customers to Peacock in Q3, and while Q4 may show improvement in that regard, it’s clear that NBCU is having to try different tactics to bring viewers into the service.
NBC Sports Network may help in that regard, by giving sports fans who prefer to watch NBC’s offerings on linear TV a more friendly on-ramp to streaming. A gentle introduction to Peacock’s sports inventory on NBC Sports Network may lower barriers for viewers who have heretofore been hesitant to stream for one reason or another.
That’s one side of the coin for NBCU. The other side of that coin is that Peacock, despite the huge number of marquee sporting events it offers, cannot attract a reliably large enough audience. In a world where streaming services are consolidating fast, the company has to turn that around before another company turns an acquisitive eye toward Peacock. Will the launch of NBC Sports Network help bring more customers to Peacock? We’ll just have to wait and see.
