Roku tallies 90 million streaming households at start of 2025
The company is not revealing monthly active users for its Roku Channel streaming service, but Nielsen data has good news for it there, too.
The continued dominance of Roku as a streaming device manufacturer is impressive. Roku is the most popular streaming player maker in the United States, and new data released by the company regarding its performance in 2024 reinforces that notion. Roku ended the first week of 2025 with 90 million streaming households, impressive growth from its third-quarter numbers and yet another indication that it is tops in the American marketplace.
Key Details:
- Roku announced it had 85.5 million streaming households as of the end of the third quarter.
- The company did not reveal how many monthly active users are on The Roku Channel.
- Roku has already announced a goal of 100 million user accounts in the next 18 months.
Roku ended the third quarter of 2024 with 85.5 million streaming households to its name, meaning it jumped by nearly 5 million over the holiday season. Its presence in 90 million homes means that nearly half of all American homes now have a Roku device.
“Roku’s extensive scale sets us apart in the streaming industry, with more engagement than any other TV OS platform in the U.S.,” said Anthony Wood, CEO of Roku. “Thanks to our laser focus on simplifying and enhancing the streamer’s journey, Roku is the preferred choice for millions of viewers. I’m grateful to our customers, partners, advertisers, and employees for helping us reach this notable milestone.”
The company declined to share the monthly active user statistics for its free streaming service The Roku Channel in its latest report, so it’s hard to say if it can beat out Tubi and its recently reported 97 million user base. However, Nielsen data from November showed The Roku Channel surpassing Tubi as the top free streaming service in terms of share of total TV viewing, garnering 1.9% of all TV watched during the month.
Roku did share that its streamer saw 80% growth year-over-year, though it wasn’t clear if that number referred to monthly active users, viewing hours, or a combination of those statistics.
The numbers are seemingly in line with Roku's stated goal of hitting 100 million active user accounts in the next 18 months. The company must continue to sell its smart TVs and ubiquitous streaming sticks at the same pace if it wants to hit that target, but it seems well within reach as of now.
