Roku launches new game to help owners find new shows, movies

The ‘Roklue’ game will test a viewer”s TV show and movie knowledge and aid them in discovering new titles.

Known for breaking major streaming stories, he’s covered everything from Netflix policy shifts to Peacock’s ad-tier changes. A sci-fi fan and Toshiba Fire TV user, he brings sharp analysis and a love for the genre to his reporting.

With all of the content available on the Roku platform, it’s easy to see why some people would struggle with finding their next watch while browsing. The company has introduced a new way to fight such overwhelm, in the form of a new interactive game called “Roklue.” The game tests the knowledge of users on current TV shows and movies, as well as old favorites, in the hopes of guiding them to a new streaming obsession.

Key Details:

  • Play now: Roklue is launching across Roku platforms this week.
  • Oscar bait: The inaugural Roklue experience will focus on famous award show moments.
  • Find your next fave: The game is intended to help lead viewers to a new watch.

The Roklue game will be available on Roku streaming players and smart TVs, and will be accessible via the Roku home screen. The game tests players on the most-discussed movies and TV shows of the day, as well as old favorites that they’ve streamed multiple times.

The first Roklue theme will be “Roklue: Awards Season.” As the name suggests, it will feature clues inspired by the most celebrated films in Hollywood history, as well as culturally impactful award show moments. “Rokue: Awards Season” launches March 7.

“At Roku, we’re creating experiences you can’t get anywhere else — streaming that is interactive, fun, and powered by the full breadth of content on the platform,” Roku executive Lisa Holme said. “Roklue will connect streamers to shows and movies in a way that makes discovery feel less like work and more like play.”

The launch of Roklue is intended not only to help viewers have fun but to find a new TV show or movie to stream. By exposing players to new TV shows and movies, Roku can encourage them to try a new title or return to a series or film they’ve watched previously.

The Roku home screen’s famed background art has also been enlisted to aid viewers in content discovery. In October, Roku updated its home screen so that major new releases would be embedded in the Roku cityscape itself. Clearly, Roku knows viewers are having a hard time finding new titles to stream, and wants to help as best it can.
