When will you be able to stream Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’?
Christopher Nolan’s new historical epic hits theaters on Friday. When will it be streaming at home?
Christopher Nolan’s latest opus is finally arriving on the big screen on Friday, July 17, with preview screenings kicking off on Thursday, July 16, as “The Odyssey” arrives in cinemas around the United States. With a runtime of nearly three hours, some viewers may think of seeing the film in theaters as a feat too Homeric for their tastes, and if you’d rather wait for “The Odyssey” to stream at home, we’ll explain when we think you’ll be able to below.
Key Details:
- Strong start: Early reviews call “The Odyssey” one of Nolan’s best-ever films.
- Easy call: Since Universal is distributing the movie, “The Odyssey” will stream first on Peacock.
- Get comfortable:Fans who opt to wait for the film to arrive on Peacock are likely in for a long delay.
“The Odyssey” is Nolan’s newest adaptation of the classic tale of Odysseus, king of Ithaca. After fighting in the Trojan War, Odysseus is ready to return home, but his journey is beset by vengeful gods, terrifying monsters, and other obstacles that extend his travels for years.
The film currently sports a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, and an 88 score on Metacritic, indicating “Universal Acclaim.” Some critics are saying the movie is Nolan’s best work yet, which would be saying something indeed considering Nolan’s past works include “The Dark Knight,” “Interstellar,” and “Oppenheimer.”

When will ‘The Odyssey’ be streaming at home?
We know for a certainty where “The Odyssey” will be available once it’s done with its trip through theaters. The movie is distributed by Universal Pictures in the United States, which means it will stream on Peacock once it has completed its exclusive theatrical and premium video-on-demand (PVOD) window.
Will “The Odyssey“‘s path to streaming take as long as Odysseus’s fateful journey? Unfortunately, the answer is probably yes. Nolan’s last major release, “Oppenheimer,” was also distributed by Universal and can serve as a helpful template to use for predicting the theatrical window for “The Odyssey.” “Oppenheimer” was released in July 2023 and didn’t stream on Peacock until February 2024, over 200 days later.
“The Odyssey” will likely capture audience attention in a similar way, and I can see Universal deciding to keep the movie off streaming until the For Your Consideration season hits early next year. If that prediction proves accurate, “The Odyssey” won’t be available to watch on Peacock until February 2027. We will go with a prediction of Wednesday, Feb. 17.
