‘Love Island’ Season 8 is what I’m most excited to stream this week
Set your summer to blazing with the newest season of the popular reality series.
June arrives tomorrow, which means the official start of summer is just around the corner. But Peacock works on a different schedule; the streamer is releasing the new season of “Love Island USA” on Tuesday, June 2, getting summer started a little early. “Love Island” is always one of the hottest reality shows on TV, and Season 8 promises to turn up the temperature once again.
I normally don’t indulge in a ton of reality TV — I fool myself into thinking that my tastes are more high-brow. But when “Love Island” comes back around, I just can’t help myself, and I know I’m not alone in declaring the show’s new season the title I’m most excited to watch this week.
In Season 8 of “Love Island USA,” 11 singles from around the United States — plus one from the U.K. — head to the Fiji Villa for a new season of romance, drama, and maneuvering by contestants to stay on top. There’s a $100,000 prize at stake, not to mention the possibility of a lifetime of love.
The cast of Season 8 includes Aniya Harvey, Beatriz Hartz, Bryce Dettloff, Gabriel Casconselos, KC Chandler, Kenzie Annis, Melanie Moreno, Sean Reifel, Sincere Rhea, Trinity Tatum, Vasana Montgomery, and Zach Georgiou. Throughout the season, they’ll couple, break up, and couple again to try to outlast each other and win it all.
Meet the cast of ‘Love Island’ Season 8
One of the most unique aspects of “Love Island” is the real-time filming. The drama seen in each episode happened just hours before, giving fans the feeling of actually participating throughout the season. The live audience voting aspect of the show doesn’t hurt either; fans get to weigh in on their favorite couples, pick who goes on dates with incoming bombshells, and ultimately, the winner of the season.
It’s the fan interactivity and the immediacy of the show that make it so difficult to shake once you’re hooked. I resisted “Love Island” for a long time, writing it off as just another brainless reality show. There’s certainly an aspect of that to the series — the on-camera drama between sexy singles doesn’t exactly rewrite the unscripted TV playbook.
But as soon as I gave the series a chance, I was immediately hooked by how much it felt as if the season’s events hinged on fan participation. Picking up my phone to vote and knowing that the result will weigh heavily on what happens in next week’s episode is a unique experience that I can’t stop coming back to.
“Love Island USA” may not be for everyone, but for its huge audience, it’s the ultimate escapism. Check out the Season 8 premiere of “Love Island USA” on Peacock on Tuesday, June 2, with new episodes dropping daily following the premiere for a week, then switching to a six-episode-per-week schedule.
