Top streamers had a big presence at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.

Did you make it to San Diego over the weekend? The city’s annual Comic-Con which has become the place for major studios to announce big upcoming projects in the comic book, sci-fi, and fantasy worlds was predictably a big generator of news over the weekend. From enormous stars returning to marquee franchises to release dates for top streaming favorites, I’ll run through all the biggest news from the convention below!

Key Details:

  • Disney had the biggest shocker of the convention, announcing Robert Downey Jr. would return to the MCU as Dr. Doom.
  • Warner Bros. Discovery released a trailer for its no-longer Max Original show “The Penguin.”
  • Amazon revealed a new spinoff of “The Boys” is coming to Prime Video.

Major Streaming News from San Diego Comic-Con 2024:

Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the MCU was the biggest shock of Comic-Con.

Though not 100% streaming-related, the announcement that Robert Downey Jr. will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to play Dr. Doom rocked Comic-Con this year. Downey’s presence will likely guide the MCU through another of its so-called “phases,” which is likely to have ripple effects on Marvel titles on Disney+ as well.

New ‘Dr. Who’ Spinoff

A new Dr. Who spinoff series is in the works from Disney+.

Created by “Dr. Who” showrunner Russell T. Davies, this new series will feature the Sea Devils, a classic villain from the franchise first put on the screen in 1972. The show will be called “The War Between The Land and the Sea,” and will be a Disney+ exclusive.

Disney+ is a video streaming service with over 13,000 series and films from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, The Muppets, and more. It is available in 61 countries and 21 languages. It is notable for its popular original series like “The Mandalorian,” “Ms. Marvel,” “Loki,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” and “Andor.”

Disney+ has several plans with or without ads. Disney+ Basic with Ads costs $9.99 / month. If you don’t want ads, you can choose Disney+ Premium with No Ads which costs $15.99 / month.

The Premium plan also offers an annual option for $159.99 / year ($13.33/mo.).

If you’d like to add Hulu, choose Duo Basic (with ads) for $10.99 / month. Duo Premium offers Hulu and Disney+ ad-free for $19.99 / month.

New ‘Penguin’ Trailer

The series spawned from Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” will star Colin Farrell as Gotham crime boss Oswald Cobblepot. “The Penguin” was originally intended to be a Max original, but will now air on linear HBO starting Sept. 19 as well.

‘Creature Commandos’ First Look

Staying in the DC Comics universe, WBD also released a new trailer for its latest adult animated series “Creature Commandos,” which will actually help kick off the DC Universe reboot at WBD. The show brings back Viola Davis from live-action DC projects as Amanda Waller, and the voice cast also includes names like Frank Grillo, Sean Gunn, David Harbour, and Alan Tudyk.

‘Gremlins’ Series Adds Star, Unveils Release Date

Season 2 of the Gremlins animated series comes back to Max in October.

“Gremlins: The Wild Batch” follows the events of Season 1, which was dubbed “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai.” The new batch of episodes will drop on Oct. 3 and will welcome star Simu Liu of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” to its cast.

Max

Max is a subscription video streaming service that gives access to the full HBO library, along with exclusive Max Originals. There are hubs for content from TLC, HGTV, Food Network, Discovery, TCM, Cartoon Network, Travel Channel, ID, and more. Watch hit series like “The Last of Us,” “House of the Dragon,” “Succession,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and more. Thanks to the B/R Sports add-on, users can watch NBA, MLB, NHL, March Madness, and NASCAR events.

Max has three tiers, an ad-supported plan for $9.99 an ad-free plan for $16.99, and the ultimate tier that includes 4K for $20.99.

All Max subscribers will get the full libraries of shows like “Friends”, “The Big Bang Theory”, “South Park”, “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”, “The West Wing”, and more.

You can choose to add Max as a subscription through Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, or other Live TV providers.

New ‘The Boys’ Prequel Series ‘Vought Rising’ On the way

Vought Rising will feature familiar characters from The Boys, but will be set in a different time period.

The Boys” just wrapped its fourth season on Prime Video, so the timing of this announcement was spot-on. Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash will return as stars, and the show will explore the mysterious origins of Vought in the 1950s, as well as the antics and backstairs maneuvering of some of the first Supes, Soldier Boy, and Stormfront. The series will be a Prime Video exclusive.

‘The Rings of Power’ Season 2 Drops New Trailer

The new season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is coming to Prime Video on Aug. 29. **Watch the new trailer for Season 2 of “Rings of Power” here:

New Seasons of ‘Hazbin Hotel,’ ‘Invincible,’ ‘Sausage Party’ Shows Announced

Rounding out Amazon’s presentation at SDCC 2024 was the announcement that it would welcome new seasons of animated adult series in the coming months and years, including “Hazbin Hotel,”
Invincible” and “Sausage Party: Foodtopia.”

“Hazbin Hotel will return for Season 2 soon, but the popular animated series was also picked up for a third and fourth season, much to the delight of fans at the show’s SDCC panel.

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video is a subscription video streaming service that includes on-demand access to 10,000+ movies, TV shows, and Prime Originals like “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” “Jack Ryan,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “The Boys,” and more. Subscribers can also add third-party services like Max, Showtime, STARZ, and dozens more with Amazon Prime Video Channels. Prime Video also offers exclusive live access to NFL Thursday Night Football.

The Prime Video interface shows content included with your subscription alongside the ad-supported Freevee library and some shows and movies you need to purchase, so be sure to double-check your selection before you watch.

Prime Video is included with Amazon Prime for $14.99 per month ($139 per year), or can be purchased on its own for $8.99 per month.

Star Trek Galore

The Paramount+ SDCC presence was all about Star Trek this Comic-Con. Viewers were treated to an extended look at a scene from an episode of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” Season 3, which debuts in 2025.

There were also trailers for the animated “Star Trek: Lower Decks” and the live-action “Section 31” movie starring Michelle Yeoh, both of which are available below. All three titles are Paramount+ exclusives.

Paramount Plus

Paramount+ is a subscription video streaming service that includes on-demand access to 40,000+ TV show episodes from BET, CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. and more. Get free access with a Walmart+ subscription.

Paramount+ includes “1883,” “Tulsa King,” “Star Trek: Discovery,” “SpongeBob SquarePants,” and “PAW Patrol.” Subscribers can watch the NFL, college football, The Masters, college basketball, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa, Serie A, and NWSL. The service also offers the option to watch your live CBS affiliate. The upgraded ad-free package includes premium movies and shows from Showtime.

‘Silo’ Season 2 Gets Streaming Date

Silo will bring a new season of episodes to Apple TV+ on Nov. 15.

There wasn’t a glut of news from Apple’s streaming service, but there was one glimmer for fans of the series “Silo.” Apple TV+ announced the second season of the Rebecca Ferguson-fronted and produced show will be available to stream starting Nov. 15.

Apple TV+ is a subscription video streaming service for $9.99 a month that includes high-quality original shows and movies including Best Picture winner “CODA,” popular sitcom “Ted Lasso,” and dramas like “The Morning Show” and “Severance.” Apple TV+ is also home to MLB baseball games on Friday nights and MLS Season Pass. Apple TV+ can be added as a channel on Prime Video.
