Who should sign up for a DIRECTV Genre Pack?
The DIRECTV Genre Pack is perfect for anyone who likes to watch popular cable channels, but doesn’t necessarily need a plan that has every type of channel rolled into one. These plans can be very expensive, and have long led customers to feel as if they are paying way more than they need to each month for channels they don’t even watch. In the old cable days, this feeling was more or less an inescapable fact of pay TV.
But Genre Packs change all that. They allow customers to select only the category of cable programming they want to watch most, and cut out the extra junk that can cause a bill to skyrocket. Who is a good fit for DIRECTV MySports?
The MySports package has 20+ sports channels, including the ESPN family of networks, FS1, FS2, league-aligned channels such as NFL Network, and local broadcast channels ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC in nearly all markets. It also includes some news networks like CNN and Fox News, and costs $70 per month.
This package is perfect for any sports fan who prefers to see all of their favorite events on a single app, as opposed to bouncing around on-demand streaming services looking for the big game. It’s probably not a good fit for viewers who have a big stack of on-demand streaming services like HBO Max, Paramount+, and Peacock, since customers will probably find themselves paying for many of the same sports twice by adding MySports to that equation.
MySports is also a good fit for customers who find it hard to pay for less than $100 per month for regional sports access. The MyHome Team mini add-on pack that’s available from DIRECTV for $20 per month on top of the cost of the MySports plan gives viewers access to their local RSN in a wide variety of American markets, allowing fans to see national and local games in the same package.
Good fit: Sports fans looking for more convenience, fans looking to save on local games.
Bad fit: Viewers who stack on-demand streaming services already.
Who is a good fit for DIRECTV’s MyEntertainment pack?
The MyEntertainment package comes with more than 40 channels, including Animal Planet, Bravo, Discovery, History, Food Network, Lifetime, Paramount Network, Syfy, and more. Many of its channels are great for the whole family, though there are some that are clearly intended for a more adult audience. Families with older kids are a great fit for the MyEntertainment plan.
This package is also excellent for viewers who like the convenience offered by cable providers like Charter Communications, which allows viewers to sign up for free Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions with certain Spectrum TV plans. MyEntertainment includes these services, as well as HBO Max, and will include AMC+ in 2026 as well.
For $35 per month, this is a spectacular mix of on-demand content and live channels. For non-sports fans, families with older kids, and viewers who love a bundle, MyEntertainment is a superior choice.
Good fit: Families with older kids, streaming bundle seekers, non-sports fans.
Bad fit: Sports lovers, families with younger kids
Who is a good fit for DIRECTV’s MyNews pack?
The MyNews Genre Pack is meant to super-serve viewers who place a great value on access to local and national news stories. To that end, MyNews comes with local broadcast channels in nearly every market, as well as cable news channels CNN, Fox News, and MS NOW, and more. It has fewer than 20 channels total, at a cost of $40 per month.
Obviously, viewers who follow the news intently will want to steer toward this plan, but it has another audience that may not be as obvious at first. The inclusion of local broadcast channels in this package means viewers get to watch not just news, but sports and primetime programming on these channels as well. The price of $40 per month is one of the cheapest available for streaming local networks, so if getting these channels is a priority, MyNews is a good, lower-cost choice.
Good fit: News junkies, viewers who want local broadcast channels.
Bad fit: Viewers looking for national sports or cable entertainment channels.
Who is a good fit for DIRECTV’s MyKids pack?
While the MyEntertainment package may not be the best fit for families with younger kids, the MyKids package is exactly right for this demographic. This Genre Pack offers Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and other top cable channels with kids’ programming, plus a Disney+ subscription at a combined price of $20 per month.
While the package probably won’t appeal to anyone except families with younger children, this group is not only large but often desperate for family-friendly programming at an affordable price. The MyKids Genre Pack fills that need perfectly.
Good fit: Families with younger kids looking to save on entertainment.
Bad fit: Individuals without a love for nostalgia, families with older kids.
Who is a good fit for DIRECTV’s MiEspañol pack?
The MiEspañol plan is intended to super-serve Spanish-language audiences, and it does a great job. With more than 60 channels, including sports networks like ESPN Deportes and Fox Deportes, channels such as Telemundo and Universo, this package is an excellent value at $35 per month — especially with ViX Premium included in the price!
Good fit: Spanish-language customers.
