This is when you’ll be able to stream ‘Wicked’ at home
The beloved musical is getting a digital release packed with special features before the year is out!
Forget defying gravity, “Wicked” is defying cinemas! The popular film adaptation of the musical of the same name is staying in theaters for the foreseeable future, but Universal Pictures has announced that it will be available for digital rental and purchase within mere days. The movie isn’t coming to Peacock quite yet, but fans who have been desperate to watch the film from home will soon have an outlet for doing so!
Key Details:
- “Wicked” will arrive on digital rental and purchase platforms on Jan. 31.
- The release will be stuffed with special features, including a singalong version.
- The Streamable predicts “Wicked” won’t be available to stream on Peacock for several months.
Universal has announced that “Wicked” will be available for digital rental or purchase as of Tuesday, Dec. 31. Fans can preorder the movie on Amazon now for $30, or find it in the Apple TV store, Cox’s digital store, Fandango at Home (formerly Vudu), Microsoft Movies & TV, or Xfinity’s rental and purchase platform. The industry term for these sites is premium video-on-demand (PVOD) platforms since they allow viewers to watch movies that are still in theaters at home instead.
The release will be absolutely packed with special features, including a sing-along version that lets fans croon along with their favorite tracks. There will also be deleted scenes, commentary from the cast and crew, and a great lineup of other bonuses.
The movie’s digital release will precede its DVD and Blu-ray debut by more than a month. “Wicked” isn’t scheduled to be available on physical media sources until Feb. 4, so if you’re waiting until then to get your hands on a box set, you are in for a bit of a delay.
That delay still isn’t as considerable as the one we think you’ll have to endure to see the movie on streaming. “Wicked” will definitely be heading to Peacock once it’s ready to stream on-demand, but in our expert prediction, we prognosticated that “Wicked” wouldn’t be available to stream there until June. That’s a long wait, but it still seems likely that Universal will give the movie a long runway on PVOD platforms to continue monetizing it after its strong box office.
Only time will tell if our estimate will be correct, but if you’re willing to pay a premium price for “Wicked,” you’ll be able to own it before the new year! Fans need only wait until Dec. 31 to stream “Wicked” on Prime Video or other PVOD outlets.
