Amazon Fire TVs adding new jump-to-scene feature powered by AI

The feature will let viewers navigate directly to a particular scene using Alexa.

The discourse around artificial intelligence in the United States is continuing to grow, but Amazon is leaving little doubt as to which side of the debate it lands on. Amazon announced today that it was launching a new feature for Alexa+ users that will allow them to jump to specific scenes in a movie just by asking.

Key Details:

  • Get to it: The new Alexa+ feature lets Fire TV owners jump straight to the movie moment they want to watch.
  • Many and more: The feature works with thousands of movies now found on Prime Video, with more to come.
  • Part of the trend: Amazon has embedded AI features into many parts of the Fire TV and Prime Video experience.

This new Fire TV feature allows a user to tell Alexa to take them directly to a scene in their chosen movie, instead of having to fast-forward or search for it manually. Just describe the scene to Alexa with a few words, and the AI-powered assistant will do the rest.

Viewers can use prompts like “Jump to the boulder chase scene in ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark,’” or “Jump to the Ozdust ballroom scene in ‘Wicked,’” and the feature will whisk the viewer directly to that scene. Alexa+ can even identify the movie a viewer wants to see without having the title.

The feature works with thousands of movie titles now found on Prime Video, including tens of thousands of indexed scenes. Amazon says it is working hard to add additional movies to be compatible with the new feature. In order for customers to use it, however, the movie will need to be included with a Prime membership, or to have been purchased or rented from Prime Video.

The ability to jump directly to a scene is only available to Alexa+ customers. This premium version of Amazon’s home assistant is included at no additional cost for Prime members, and once the free early access period for Alexa+ ends, shoppers can sign up for it as a monthly subscription for $20.

Amazon has embedded AI into many customer-facing parts of its business, including Fire TV devices and Prime Video. Representatives from the streamer confirmed they were looking for more AI integration possibilities this summer, and is also leveraging artificial intelligence in its NBA broadcasts.
