Spooky Season haunts HBO Max with ‘Horror Comes Home’ collection
Now that the calendar has flipped to October, it is time for haunts, horrors, and all things that go bump in the night to take center stage on streaming.
HBO Max is turning October into one very long, very bloody movie night. The streamer has launched “Horror Comes Home,” a dedicated Halloween hub bringing together new horror releases, blockbuster franchises, modern favorites, and enough genre classics to ensure that anyone hoping to sleep peacefully between now and Nov. 1 probably should just watch something else. It features different curated sections designed for everything from supernatural scares and creature features to slashers and horror movie marathons.
Key Details:
- Welcome aboard: Antenna’s data shows that 40% of gross streaming subscriber adds are at the end of the year.
- Accepting ads: A growing percentage of gross streaming additions are on ad plans.
- Following football: The NFL’s increasing presence on streamers is helping these services own the autumn.
HBO Max actually got the Halloween festivities started a little early in September with the streaming debut of A24’s “Backrooms,” which became the studio’s highest-grossing movie ever both domestically and worldwide. But October will bring even more new additions.
“Evil Dead Burn” arrives Friday, Oct. 2, while the new HBO Original documentary series “The Pet Cemetery Murders: A Ghost Story” premieres Sunday, Oct. 11. Recent films including “Lee Cronin’s The Mummy,” “The Strangers: Chapter 2,” and “undertone” are already available to stream.
Throughout October, HBO Max will rotate titles through themed collections including “Trick or Treat,” “Must-Scream Horror,” “A Killer Movie Marathon,” “Haunted Hall of Fame,” “Creature Features,” and the appropriately ominous “What’s Around the Corner,” which debuts Friday, Oct. 2.
And if that isn’t enough nightmare fuel, HBO Max is also leaning heavily on its deep horror library. with recent hits like “Weapons,” “Sinners,” and “Bring Her Back,” along with classics including “The Conjuring,” “It,” “Insidious,” “The Blair Witch Project,” and “Evil Dead.”
There are also plenty of classics for viewers who prefer their terror slightly more vintage, including “Carrie,” “The Exorcist,” “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Poltergeist,” “Gremlins,” and “The Shining.” After all, nothing says cozy fall evening quite like demonic possession, haunted hotels, and a child murderer invading your dreams.
Horror fans who suffer from the uniquely modern terror of having to choose something to watch can also turn on HBO Max’s new “Essential Horror” virtual channel, which continuously serves up a curated collection of films and series from the streamer’s catalog around the clock.
