The College Football Playoff gets back into action on New Year’s Eve as the No. 6 Penn State Nittany Lions, an at-large selection from the Big Ten, will face off against the No. 3 Boise State Broncos, the Mountain West champions, in the Fiesta Bowl. Penn State blew out SMU in the opening round while Boise had the benefit of a bye. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Dec. 31 and it will air on ESPN. While it is Boise State that comes into this game as the higher seed, coming off of a bye, and led by the Heisman Trophy running back Ashton Jeanty, the Las Vegas oddsmakers are heavily favoring Penn State. The Nittany Lions enter the game as 11-point favorites emphasizing the disparity between power and non-power conference teams.
When the Broncos have the ball, it is going to be strength vs. strength as Jeanty is by far the most productive running back in the country. His 192.08 yards per game is 53.75 more than anyone else in FBS. However, he is going up against the No. 7 rushing defense in the country, as PSU only allows 100.36 yards on the ground per game. So something will have to give in the Fiesta Bowl.
Conversely, when Penn State is on offense, the Nittany Lions will also try to establish the run. They are averaging 201.21 yards per game (19th-best nationally) and quarterback Drew Allar complements the running game by averaging 215.8 through the air. the winner of the matchup will face the winner of No. 2 Georgia and No. 5 Notre Dame who will play on New Year’s Day in the Sugar Bowl.
