First streaming date for ‘The Odyssey’ revealed
Viewers will be able to rent or purchase the movie digitally on Prime Video and other platforms soon.
“The Odyssey” completely dominated the summer box office, raking in more than $1.7 billion globally and becoming Universal’s highest-grossing film of all time. The movie has, as expected, had an extended theatrical run, but it’s finally nearly ready to roll out on digital rental and purchase platforms like Prime Video.
Key Details:
- Journey ending: “The Odyssey” will arrive on transactional video platforms on Nov. 17.
- Pay to play: The film will cost $20 to buy on Prime Video.
- Keep waiting?: The Streamable has predicted “The Odyssey” won’t arrive on Peacock until February.
The long journey of “The Odyssey” through American cinemas has been nearly as long as that of Odysseus himself. The film was first released on Friday, July 17, but won’t be released on transactional video-on-demand (TVOD) platforms like Prime Video until Nov. 17.
Prime Video will be offering the movie for purchase for $20, and is available for preorder now. Customers can also now preorder the DVD from various retailers, if they prefer to purchase a physical copy of “The Odyssey” to ensure it never vanishes into the digital ether.
“The Odyssey” is the latest adaptation of the classical saga by Homer. It follows Odysseus, king of Ithaca, as he attempts to journey home after the Trojan War. On the way, he must battle mythical monsters and seductive Sirens, all while trying to keep his crew intact.
If The Streamable's prediction is correct, “The Odyssey” won’t hit Peacock until February, more than 200 days after its initial release in theaters. Thus far, the movie has followed the schedule of previous Universal blockbuster “Oppenheimer,” which released theatrically in July 2023, came out on digital platforms in November, and did not stream on Peacock until February 2024.
