The wrestling and pop culture legend died on Thursday at the age of 71.
Bigger than Stone Cold Steve Austin, bigger than The Rock, bigger than John Cena, the world of professional wrestling has arguably never created a bigger star than Hulk Hogan. With his brightly colored red and yellow ring attire, his trademark handlebar mustache, his easily ripped-off shirt, and larger-than-life personality, Hogan became the face of the WWF (now the WWE) as it rose to national prominence in the 1980s. His charisma and family-friendly image telling kids to “Say your prayers, take your vitamins, and believe in yourself” made him a pop culture phenomenon.
Hogan, whose real name was Terry Bollea died on Thursday, July 24 at 71 years of age following an apparent cardiac arrest, according to TMZ. Hogan’s passing came just days after Fox Nation announced that it would broadcast the forthcoming “Real American Freestyle” wrestling promotion run by Hogan and former professional wrestling executive Eric Bischoff. There has been no word as of publication time regarding the future of the promotion that aims to combine Olympic-style wrestling athleticism with the showmanship of pro wrestling.
As his wrestling star grew, Hogan transitioned to TV and film work, most famously as Thunderlips in “Rocky III.” Throughout the 1980s and ’90s, Hogan continued to be one of the largest draws in wrestling, while also expanding his brand to all corners of pop culture. While he was the subject of numerous controversies later in his life, there is no doubt about his impact on the worlds of wrestling and entertainment.
