Netflix announces support for some Fire TV devices ending soon

Netflix announces support for some Fire TV devices ending soon

Viewers will no longer receive critical updates for the Netflix app on these Fire TV devices.

Netflix will no longer support its app on Gen-1 Fire TVs as of June 3.

Every piece of electronics has its day, and that day is passing for first-generation Amazon Fire TV devices. When Netflix says it’s done with you, it’s time to consider heading out to pasture. That’s happening this week, as Netflix has announced it will no longer support a selection of older Fire TV sets and streaming devices.

Key Details:

  • A decade old: Fire TVs from 2014 will no longer receive support from Netflix for its app.
  • Sticks and stones: Two Amazon Fire Stick models will also stop receiving support.
  • Coming soon: Netflix will stop supporting its app on these devices on June 3.

As revealed by Netflix, it will stop supporting its app on first-generation Fire TV models from 2014 in the coming days. An email to affected users revealed that these models will no longer be compatible with the Netflix app as of Tuesday, June 3.

Also due to stop receiving support from Netflix are the Fire TV Stick (2014) and the Fire TV Stick with Alexa (2016) models. These devices haven’t gotten updates from Amazon in some time, and this is as good a signal as any to those who still own them that it may be time to upgrade.

If you’re wondering if you own a Fire TV that’s due to stop receiving Netflix reports on June 3, it’s easy to check. Go into Settings, then navigate to My Fire TV, and then About. If it says that your device is a first-generation Fire TV set or stick, you’ll have to consider a new streaming player.

Netflix often updates its apps, and that means that the list of devices that are no longer compatible with it is augmenting all the time. Last year, for example, Netflix announced it would no longer be supporting its app on older models of Sony smart TV.

If you need a new smart TV as a result of this announcement, you can grab new Fire TV models starting at just $80. You can also get the latest model of Fire TV Stick HD starting at just $20 with a special deal, or if you want to move off the Amazon line, you can also grab the Roku Express 4K+ for $30 with a limited-time offer. The barrier for replacing a now-defunct Fire TV device shouldn’t be too high, but if you decide not to and you own one of those devices, you will no longer receive support for the Netflix app starting June 3.
