Jake Paul to face Anthony Joshua on Netflix next month
Jake Paul to face Anthony Joshua on Netflix next month
The fight is a make-up for the Paul vs Tank Davis bout that was axed in November on the streamer.
Netflix and Jake Paul are coming back together for another boxing match before the year is out. On Monday, Netflix announced it had scheduled a bout between Paul and Anthony Joshua for December, giving subscribers another marquee live sporting event to enjoy a few days before the service presents its second annual NFL doubleheader on Christmas Day.
Key Details:
- Heating up December: Jake Paul vs. Anthony Joshua is slated for Dec. 19.
- Heavyweight bout: Joshua is a former unified heavyweight world champion and Olympic gold medalist.
- Swap in, swap out: The fight replaces the Jake Paul vs. Tank Davis bout that was canceled last month.
As announced on Monday, Paul will face Joshua at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida on Friday, Dec. 19 at 8 p.m. ET. Matchups down the card have yet to be announced; Paul’s previously scheduled fight night on Netflix was to feature Anderson Silva's return to the ring, but he has not been confirmed for this card.
Joshua is one of the most accomplished names in heavyweight boxing of the last decade. He won an Olympic gold medal in 2012, then collected and defended WBO, WBA, and IBF titles. He carried an unbeaten streak into 2019 and became a two-time unified heavyweight champion that year.
“Jake or anyone can get this work,” Joshua said. “No mercy. I took some time out and I’m coming back with a mega show. It’s a big opportunity for me. Whether you like it or not, I’m here to do massive numbers, have big fights and break every record whilst keeping cool, calm and collected. Mark my words, you’ll see a lot more fighters take these opportunities in the future. I’m about to break the internet over Jake Paul’s face.”
The bout between Paul and Joshua will fill an empty slot in the Netflix boxing calendar. Paul was set to fight Gervonta “Tank” Davis on Nov. 14 on the streamer, but the fight was called off days before it was slated to stream. Paul blamed Davis’ behavior in the lead-up to the fight as the reason, likely a reference to a civil lawsuit in which Davis is accused of kidnapping and battery.
Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions pledged to get another fight scheduled on Netflix before the end of the year, and that promise has been carried out. Are you excited about seeing the YouTuber-turned-boxer enter the ring against Joshua on Dec. 19? Let us know in the comments!
