Netflix announces Mayweather vs. Pacquaio II for September
A rematch of the two legendary fighters marks the next major combat sports offering from the streamer.
The last time Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao faced each other in a boxing ring, the pay-per-view price tage to watch the fight started at a whopping $90. When the two boxing legends step into the ring this fall for a rematch, fans will only have to pay one-tenth of that price to watch. Mayweather vs. Pacquiao II is officially coming to Netflix in September, becoming the next major combat sports event to stream on the world’s largest streaming service.
Key Details:
- Let’s go again: Netflix will stream Mayweather vs. Pacquiao II on Sept. 19.
- Record-setter: The first bout between the two became the highest-grossing fight in boxing history.
- Next up: Netflix recently announced it would host an MMA bout between Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano.
Mayweather vs. Pacquiao II will officially stream on Netflix globally on Sept. 19. The fight will be available to subscribers on all Netflix plans, starting with the Standard with Ads tier, which costs $9 per month in the United States. As is the standard for Netflix, there will be no pay-per-view fee to watch the fight, but there almost certainly will be advertisements.
The streamer could be in for a ratings bonanza with the bout, which is packed with storylines that are now over a decade old. Mayweather won the first fight between the two in 2015, which became the highest-grossing event in the history of boxing, generating more than $600 million in total revenue.
Since Netflix isn’t charging a pay-per-view fee for the rematch, it won’t quite reach those levels of largesse. But viewership is another matter; Netflix has set viewing records with previous presentations of boxing events, and it could draw a huge worldwide audience for Mayweather vs. Pacquiao II, given both fighters’ international appeal.
“Earlier in my career, I spent weeks in Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao’s training camps in Las Vegas and the Philippines,” Netflix VP Gabe Spitzer said. “It was undeniable that they were the two hardest workers in boxing, and their wins and accolades were a product of that. Bringing this rematch to Netflix is a massive ‘full circle’ moment. We’re thrilled to combine their storied rivalry with the immersive technology of Sphere to deliver a landmark sporting event to our members worldwide.”
The announcement of Mayweather vs. Pacquiao II comes just days after Netflix revealed it would host its first-ever MMA fight later this year, a bout between UFC legends Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano. The streamer has also offered several bouts featuring YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, and since boxing matches are, by their very nature, one-off viewing events, Netflix will likely continue to seek out marquee match-ups to stream in the future.
