Breaking: ‘Yellowstone’ to Air Final Episodes in November 2024; Spin-Off and New Prequel in the Works

The behind-the-scenes drama has been almost as juicy as what’s been on the screen when it comes to the Dutton family over the past year, but it finally appears as though there is some closure for the soapy saga of “Yellowstone’s” delayed fifth season. Cable television’s most popular show first began airing Season 5 episodes nearly one year ago with the plan to air the back half of the season in summer 2023, but dual Hollywood strikes and a growing feud between creator Taylor Sheridan and leading man Kevin Costner put a stop to that. Now, Deadline is reporting that the remaining “Yellowstone” Season 5 episodes — which will be its last — will finally air on Paramount Network in November 2024, two years after the season began.

“Yellowstone” Season 5 Part 2 will premiere next November to wrap up the series and the previously announced spin-off series that will reportedly star Matthew McConaughey will premiere in December. That show will now be called “2024,” keeping with the naming conventions of the franchise’s prequel series, “1883” and “1923.” In fact, a new prequel is currently in the works and its working title is reportedly “1944.”

Despite months of rumors and reporting on the rift between Sheridan and Costner, Deadline indicates that the Oscar-winning star still could return for the series' final episodes. Since Sheridan is almost single-handedly overseeing an expansive cinematic universe, he has developed a reputation for not always hitting deadlines, which is what allegedly first drew the ire of Costner, who has been writing, directing, producing, and starring in a two-part film called “Horizon: An American Saga,” which is expected to premiere in 2024. The fluctuating “Yellowstone” shooting schedule caused problems for the star, and then Costner’s demands for script approval was reportedly the final straw for Sheridan. However, perhaps the two-plus year delay in filming will allow the two mercurial creators to get back on the same page for the final episodes.

What Does the End of ‘Yellowstone’ Mean for the Rest of the Sheridan-Verse?

While the flagship series in the Taylor Sheridan Universe is coming to an end, the Dutton Family saga is far from over. In addition to the sequel kicking off on the heels of “Yellowstone’s” finale, later this month, Paramount+ will premiere a spin-off of the “1883” prequel focusing on real-life deputy U.S. Marshal called “Lawmen: Bass Reeves.” And with the “1944” prequel series in pre-production now, there will undoubtedly be more to come.

What is currently unclear is what the “2024” sequel series will look like. While McConaughey is presumed to be leading the show, there has been no confirmation about its setting. Reports have suggested that it will essentially be the previously announced “6666” series set on the real-life Texas ranch that Sheridan purchased in 2021. However, with the conclusion of “Yellowstone,” some have speculated that it could essentially continue the stories from the original series.

Whatever the focus of this new modern-day series, it should have major implications for Paramount. Thanks to a deal that predates Paramount+, episodes of “Yellowstone” stream on Peacock, something that Paramount Global admits was a mistake. But, if the original series ends, so does that deal, and episodes of “2024” — even if it is essentially an extension of the original — will air on Paramount Network and then stream on Paramount+.

How Can You Stream ‘Yellowstone’ and the Rest of Taylor Sheridan’s Series?

As mentioned previously, all episodes of “Yellowstone” Season 1 through Season 5 Part 1 are available to stream on-demand on Peacock, but that’s not the only way to stream them. Currently, CBS is airing multiple episodes of “Yellowstone” every Sunday night, so, with a subscription to Paramount+ with SHOWTIME, you will have access to the episodes as they air on the broadcast network. You won’t be able to watch any episodes on demand on Paramount+, but they were available to stream live for just $11.99 per month.

The other option is to subscribe to a live TV streaming service that includes the Paramount Channel. Depending on your plan, that should allow you to watch previous seasons of “Yellowstone” on demand. The cheapest option would be with Philo, a monthly subscription costs only $25.

The rest of the extended Sheridan Universe is available to stream exclusively on Paramount+. In addition to the “Yellowstone” prequels and eventual spinoff, there is also “Mayor of Kingstown,” “Tulsa King,” and “Special Ops: Lioness.”
