The PGA of America extends deal with NBC Sports
The PGA of America extends deal with NBC Sports
The deal will see the Ryder Cup and other top events remain on NBC platforms until 2033.
The PGA of America is leaving its golf cart parked at NBC for a few more years. The two sides have officially agreed to an extension of their media rights deal, and the PGA has reached a concurrent extension with USA Sports, which now controls Golf Channel and USA Network. The deal means that major golf events, including the Ryder Cup, will stay on their current broadcast and streaming homes through 2033.
Key Details:
- Two more years: The extension lengthens PGA’s deal with NBC and USA Sports through 2033.
- Crown jewel: The highlight of the deal is the Ryder Cup, which will air on NBC and USA platforms.
- Separate but together: The deal highlights the spinoff of NBCU’s former cable channels.
PGA’s deal with NBC Sports and USA Sports formerly expired in 2031, but now runs through 2033 thanks to this extension. The top event included in the deal is the Ryder Cup, which will continue to air on the NBC broadcast channel, Golf Channel, USA Network, and Peacock.
The deal will also see NBC and Peacock continue to offer coverage of the Women’s PGA Championship through 2033, in tandem with Golf Channel. The Senior PGA Championship and PGA Professional Championship will likewise stay with their current broadcast partner, Golf Channel, until that year.
“Extending our partnership with NBC Sports and USA Sports through 2033 reflects the strength of our collaboration and our shared vision for the future of the game,” PGA of America CEO Terry Clark said. “Together, we will deliver comprehensive coverage of the Ryder Cup, KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, Senior PGA Championship and PGA Professional Championship, presenting each at the highest level while elevating our major championships and marquee events as defining stages for the game, our partners and the communities we serve. We will continue showcasing the exceptional talent of PGA of America Golf Professionals and celebrating the very best in championship golf.”
Studio shows like “Live From” and “Golf Central” on Golf Channel will continue to offer critical coverage of the events included in the deal, with live analysis and news directly from the links. The three-decade partnership between NBC Sports and the PGA to broadcast the Ryder Cup has served fans well, and the relationship will continue.
“We are excited to continue our partnership with the PGA of America and USA Sports, and look forward to presenting one of the most intense international rivalries in sports at the historic Olympic Club, in the Ryder Cup’s first competition in the Bay Area,” NBC Sports EVP Justin Byczek said.
The deal highlights the fact that Golf Channel and USA Network are no longer owned by NBCUniversal. In January, the company completed a spinoff of most of its cable channels into a new company called Versant. Golf Channel and USA Network are now part of the USA Sports division of Versant, requiring the PGA to make a separate deal to keep its events on those channels.
“USA Sports has a rich history with the PGA of America and the Ryder Cup, dating back to USA Network’s exclusive live coverage of the 1989 Ryder Cup at The Belfry,” USA Sports president Matt Hong said. “We’re proud to extend our partnership with the PGA of America and NBC Sports, continuing USA Network’s legacy with the Ryder Cup and showcasing the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, the Senior PGA Championship, and the PGA Professional Championship on Golf Channel to viewers across the United States.”
