The streaming platform also saw over 34 billion streaming hours during the final three months of last year.
Roku is continuing to exert its influence over American consumers. The beloved streaming device and smart TV maker closed out 2024 with a strong fourth quarter, according to the quarterly earnings report it publicized on Thursday. As part of the report, Roku disclosed another big jump in the number of streaming households it now claims, as well as an increase in viewing time on its free streaming service The Roku Channel.
Key Details:
- Roku increased to 89.8M streaming households during the quarter.
- Streaming hours spent on The Roku Channel jumped 18% year-over-year.
- The Roku Channel added a range of new, live sports options in Q4.
In the fourth quarter of 2024, Roku saw a big jump in its penetration of streaming households in the United States. It now tallies 89.8 million streaming homes, a jump of 4.4 million over the end of the third quarter, when 85.5 million homes had a Roku device.
Total streaming hours were up to 34.1 billion, an increase from the 32 billion it compiled during Q3. Its free streaming service The Roku Channel saw streaming hours climb 82% year over year. Roku did not disclose how many monthly active users it now has on The Roku Channel, so measuring it against Tubi and its 97 million monthly active users is difficult, unfortunately.
Roku Channel made some big content additions during Q4, most of them sports related. The streamer was able to secure the rights to stream events from the 2025 X Games Aspen, and also made a deal with the Pro Volleyball Federation to stream matches from that league for free in January.
There are new, supplementary subscriptions to enjoy on The Roku Channel as well. In November, Max launched as a new subscription partner of Roku, allowing Roku Channel users to sign up for Max and keep their bills consolidated on their Roku account. In December, the anime streaming service Crunchyroll also became available to subscribe to through Roku.
Roku continues to be one of the most dominant forces in American television distribution. Its devices are found in tens of millions of homes around the country, and it continues to see more and more viewers using its free streamer as well as its hardware.
